For one Apify Actor, Timothy Kelvin saw five people open the input page and one run it. The input asked users who usually wanted to check a single company to enter an array of JSON objects. He changed the form to offer ordinary fields for one company while keeping the array option for batch runs—but says he did not yet have enough external run data to know whether the change improved usage.
Where the input form and the task did not match
In a September 18, 2026, account on DEV Community, Actor builder Timothy Kelvin describes an input-design problem in his company-buying-signal-report tool. Its main companies field expected an array of objects containing domain, greenhouseSlug, and leverSlug. Apify’s console displayed that field as a raw JSON editor.

Kelvin says most users wanted to check one company at a time. That made the array representation more work than the common task called for: users had to deal with JSON structure even when they had only one company to enter.
What Kelvin changed
He added flat, single-company fields named domain, greenhouseSlug, and leverSlug, while retaining the original array input for multi-company runs. In the code path Kelvin describes, a completed single-company input takes priority; if those fields are not filled, the Actor uses the supplied company array, with a default-company fallback.

The change offered two routes through the same tool: ordinary fields for the one-company task and the array for users who needed a batch. It did not remove the more flexible option or require every user to work with JSON.
What the numbers show—and what they do not
Kelvin reports five input-page opens and one Actor run for this tool. That is an initial observation from one product, not an industry benchmark or a controlled test. It identifies a point where users may have stopped, but it does not explain why they did so.

He later said there was not yet enough external run data to tell whether usage of the array field changed after the new fields were added. The account therefore documents a design change, not a measured increase in completion or conversion. Establishing an effect would require a suitable before-and-after comparison or control; no such result is reported.

The same pattern appeared in four other Actors
Kelvin says he searched his portfolio for object-array inputs presented as JSON editors without a single-item shortcut. He found four more examples—a hiring tracker, weather tracker, risk-briefing tool, and city council monitor—and says he applied the same fix and verified each live. He provides no separate usage or conversion figures for those tools.

When a single-item shortcut makes sense
The useful design question is not whether JSON editors are inherently bad. It is whether the input format fits the task most users are trying to complete. If one item is the common case, making a person express it as an array can add avoidable effort. If batch input is also valuable, a single-item path can coexist with the array rather than replacing it.
Kelvin’s account is a reminder that backend correctness and input usability are different checks. As he put it: “None of this shows up in a code review. It only shows up when you look at where real people stop, not just whether the backend logic is correct.”
