Quantum Bayesian networks can represent hybrid quantum-classical systems by extending a dependency graph with complex probability amplitudes, then showing where quantum paths are summed coherently or incoherently before measurement. In Robert Tucci’s 2020 framework, the diagram is a way to write and organize ordinary quantum-mechanical state vectors—not a new physical theory or a new interpretation of quantum mechanics.
How can quantum Bayesian networks represent hybrid quantum-classical systems?
A classical Bayesian network is a directed acyclic graph whose edges encode dependencies. Its joint probability distribution is factored into conditional probabilities using the chain rule. Tucci’s quantum Bayesian network (QBN) keeps that graphical intuition but replaces each conditional probability with a complex-valued conditional probability amplitude.

The resulting graph describes how amplitudes combine to form a quantum state. Measurement probabilities are then obtained with Born’s rule:

That final magnitude square is the point at which the representation departs most sharply from an ordinary probability network. Alternatives can interfere before the square is taken, whereas probabilities of already-distinguished alternatives are added after the square.
From classical conditional probabilities to quantum amplitudes
Classical Bayesian-network factorization
For classical variables, a node’s value is described by a conditional probability such as P(B|A). Multiplying the relevant conditional probabilities along the graph yields a joint probability. Every term is a non-negative real number, and mutually exclusive outcomes are added as probabilities.
Tucci’s quantum analogue
In the article’s framework, a conditional amplitude such as A(B|A) can be complex. The network’s products and sums build an amplitude for a complete assignment of quantum variables. Only after those amplitudes have been combined does Born’s rule convert the result into an observable probability.

This does not mean that a QBN changes the allowed predictions of quantum mechanics. Tucci states that quantum Bayesian networks are intended merely as a graphical representation of quantum-mechanical state vectors: they add no constraints to the standard axioms and are not intended as a new interpretation.
Coherent and incoherent summation
Tucci’s terminology makes the placement of the sum relative to the magnitude square explicit:
| Where the sum occurs | Article’s terminology | Physical reading |
|---|---|---|
| |A₁ + A₂|² | Coherent summation | Amplitudes combine first, so relative phase can produce constructive or destructive interference. |
| |A₁|² + |A₂|² | Incoherent summation | Probabilities are added after alternatives have been treated as distinguishable or otherwise decohered. |
| A mixture of the two placements | Mixed summation | Some branches remain phase-sensitive while other alternatives are combined as probabilities. |
The two expressions are generally unequal. For example, opposite phases can make A₁ + A₂ small even when both individual magnitudes are large. A diagram that merely copies the arrows of a classical network but ignores this ordering would miss the defining role of quantum interference.
Where the hybrid quantum-classical feedback loop fits
Hybrid computation repeatedly moves information between a quantum circuit and classical software. A typical parameterized-circuit workflow looks like this:
- Choose parameters: a classical program proposes gate angles or other circuit parameters.
- Execute the circuit: the quantum processor runs the parameterized circuit, often many times to estimate expectation values or sampled frequencies.
- Measure: the device returns classical data rather than an unmeasured state vector.
- Evaluate an objective: classical code computes a loss, energy estimate, or other objective from those results.
- Update parameters: a classical optimizer selects the next circuit parameters and sends them back to the quantum side.
In a QBN-style picture, the quantum portion can be represented by amplitude-bearing nodes and coherent paths, while the measured outputs feed classical nodes that perform arithmetic, optimization, and control. The loop is a conceptual map of data and dependency flow; the graph itself does not execute the circuit.

A 2024 survey of quantum software engineering describes hybrid systems as integrations of classical and quantum programs through interfaces, circuit compilation, QPU or quantum-as-a-service access, and workflow orchestration. Those layers answer practical questions that a QBN notation does not:
Best Value
- How a classical application submits a circuit and parameters to a simulator or QPU.
- When compilation and hardware-specific mapping occur.
- How measurements are returned and converted into arrays, estimates, or records.
- How retries, batching, queueing, and repeated circuit execution are managed.
- How classical preprocessing, optimization, and postprocessing are scheduled around quantum jobs.
Consequently, the network formalism and a production software stack should not be treated as interchangeable. The former organizes quantum dependencies and summations; the latter supplies APIs, compilers, runtime services, and orchestration.

| Question | Quantum Bayesian-network view | Hybrid implementation concern |
|---|---|---|
| What does the quantum part contribute? | Conditional amplitudes and their coherent or mixed combinations. | A gate sequence, a subcircuit, a functional module, or a larger end-to-end circuit. |
| Where is classical work performed? | Classical nodes can depict measured variables and feedback dependencies. | Preprocessing, parameter optimization, postprocessing, and orchestration run in conventional software. |
| How does data enter and leave? | Inputs and outputs are variables in the graph; amplitudes are converted to probabilities by measurement rules. | Data must be encoded into gates or states, sampled or measured, then returned as finite classical records. |
| What limits execution? | The diagram does not specify a device. | Circuit depth, connectivity, noise, compilation overhead, measurement count, queueing, and repeated execution affect feasibility. |
A 2026 review of parameterized quantum-circuit learning models uses related comparison axes: the scale of the input, the position of the quantum component in the processing pipeline, and how much of the computation is assigned to the quantum circuit. These are useful engineering distinctions, not a universal taxonomy implied by Tucci’s notation.
What the framework does—and does not—claim
It does provide
- A visual language for expressing dependency structure in quantum state amplitudes.
- A reminder that interference depends on summing amplitudes before applying the magnitude square.
- A way to depict mixed quantum and classical dependencies in a feedback-oriented workflow.
It does not provide
- A replacement for the standard axioms of quantum mechanics.
- A new interpretation of what a quantum state means.
- An automatic implementation model for every hybrid software stack.
- Evidence that a particular hybrid algorithm has quantum advantage.
Performance depends on the task, encoding, circuit design, optimizer, hardware, noise, and total classical overhead. The cited material supports a conceptual and architectural explanation, not a general superiority claim or a quantitative adoption statistic.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist for reading or designing a hybrid circuit
- Identify which variables are genuinely quantum and which are classical control or data.
- Mark every place where alternatives are summed; determine whether amplitudes or probabilities are being combined.
- Specify when measurement occurs, because measurement changes what information can flow to the classical program.
- Record the encoding, circuit depth, hardware assumptions, and number of repeated executions.
- Define the classical objective and the exact data returned from each quantum run.
- Separate a diagrammatic explanation from claims about runtime, scalability, or quantum advantage.
