A converter raises the battery’s voltage enough to create an arc between two diverging conductors; the arc rises with heated air, then extinguishes and starts again at the narrow base. Because the output can deliver a severe shock, this is best understood as a demonstration for a properly equipped, enclosed setting—not a casual DIY build.
What a portable Jacob’s ladder is
The electrical Jacob’s ladder uses two stiff conducting bars or wires arranged close together at the bottom and farther apart at the top. A high-voltage supply creates an electrical arc across the smallest gap. The display’s motion gives it the appearance of a spark climbing the wires.

This is distinct from a maritime Jacob’s ladder, which is a rope or metal ladder used for vessel access. The shared name refers to two different devices with different purposes, mechanisms, and hazards.

How the climbing arc works
- The arc begins at the base. When power is applied, the shortest gap between the conductors is easiest for the electrical discharge to bridge.
- Hot air carries the arc upward. The arc heats surrounding air, which rises by thermal buoyancy. Magnetic forces also contribute, but buoyancy is the dominant mechanism described by the University of Wisconsin Physics Demonstrations guide.
- The widening gap ends the discharge. As the arc rises, the distance between the conductors increases. The arc lengthens and its impedance rises until the supply can no longer sustain it.
- The cycle restarts. Once the upper arc goes out, a new one forms at the narrow bottom gap.
The University of Wisconsin guide says a good demonstration preferably uses a current-limited supply above 10 kV and 1 mA. Those figures describe the guide’s demonstration conditions; they are not a consumer-safe specification or a recommendation to build one.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What makes a portable version portable
A compact build does not eliminate the need for high voltage: it uses a battery to power a high-voltage converter. Hackaday’s January 2017 project report describes a 9 V battery approach, while a June 2017 report on mitxela’s compact unit describes a battery-powered design with a likely inexpensive high-voltage module.
That later unit’s enclosure measured 45 mm square and 17 mm thick, with the wires adding about 150 mm of total height. Hackaday estimated that its LiPo battery might run for up to four minutes, while cautioning that the transistors might not last that long despite heat sinks. These are details of that particular hobby project, not dependable runtime or durability figures for portable Jacob’s ladders generally.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
A 9 V battery is only the converter’s input; it does not mean the exposed output is low voltage or safe to touch. The reports describe a short-duration novelty device, not a continuously rated instrument.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy a Jacob’s ladder can be dangerous
The University of Wisconsin guide calls the demonstration “potentially very dangerous.” It warns that currents above a few milliamperes can severely shock someone who comes too close to the bars. High voltage, exposed conductors, and an arc make casual handling hazardous even when the power source is a small battery.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
The guide recommends current limiting and says a transparent case is the safest arrangement. A stable mounting base and physical insulation are also important to keep the assembly from moving or being contacted. Enclosed operation has an additional hazard: the guide warns that it produces nitrogen oxides and ozone. An enclosure therefore needs to be considered alongside ventilation and the demonstration environment, not treated as a substitute for safety planning.
The available project reports and demonstration guide do not establish a safe consumer-ready portable design. A hobby build’s small dimensions or short battery runtime should not be taken as evidence that it is suitable for unsupervised use.

Electrical and maritime Jacob’s ladders are not interchangeable
| Meaning | Purpose and mechanism | Main hazard | Relevant guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electrical display | Creates an arc between diverging conductors; heated air carries it upward. | Electric shock and, in enclosed operation, ozone and nitrogen oxides. | University of Wisconsin Physics Demonstrations guidance on the high-voltage demonstration. |
| Maritime access ladder | A rope or metal ladder used for vessel access. | Falls and crushing hazards. | OSHA 29 CFR 1918.23 addresses shipboard ladders and access between a vessel and barge. |
For maritime use, OSHA’s rule includes requirements for double-rung or flat-tread construction, good maintenance, secure attachment, and avoiding slack unless the ladder is fully pulled up. It also requires protection against crushing or falls where the ladder is used between a vessel and barge. Those requirements concern access ladders, not the electrical display.
