Cook used a Canon EOS R50; Davies used a professional-grade Canon EOS R5 Mark II. The day offered Cook a first chance to apply her camera basics to the speed and uncertainty of pitchside football—not a controlled test of the two cameras.
From portrait photography to the pitch
Cook studies photography at Edinburgh College. She first picked up a digital camera in 2023 and was especially interested in commercial photography, fashion and portraits. For the Digital Camera feature, she spent the match learning from Davies, Motherwell’s club photographer, in a setting where the action cannot be planned like a studio session.
“I’m hoping to figure out how to approach different styles of shots. In particular, I’m keen to learn how to capture dramatic images of football,” Cook said. She described the uncertainty as part of the appeal: “I am drawn to the excitement of sports photography; you never know exactly what’s going to happen next.”
She also contrasted the experience with her usual work: “You’re right in front of the action pitchside. It’s the exact opposite of studio-based photography, where everything is planned,” she said.

What the feature says about the cameras
Cook’s Canon EOS R50 is an entry-level mirrorless camera with a 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor, according to the feature. Davies used a Canon EOS R5 Mark II. The difference in their roles and equipment provides context for the day, but the feature does not report a controlled comparison or show that either body alone produced a particular result. It does not identify Cook’s lens, focal length, frame rate, shutter speed or complete settings.
Autofocus choices that help follow football
The feature’s practical guidance focuses on controlling what the camera follows as players move through the frame. Menu names and available detection modes vary by camera, so treat these as concepts to map to your own model’s controls.

- Choose a suitable subject-detection mode. Set detection to people or athletes if your camera offers those options, so autofocus can prioritize a player rather than an unrelated part of the scene.
- Use continuous autofocus. Servo or continuous AF keeps refocusing as the subject moves, unlike a mode intended to focus once and hold.
- Limit unwanted focus switching. Reduce the sensitivity to objects passing between you and the intended player; otherwise, another body crossing the frame can draw focus away from the subject.
- Pause autofocus when appropriate. An AF Stop button can halt focusing when a subject is likely to remain at a steady distance or when the camera is at risk of choosing the background. Its usefulness depends on the camera and the moment.
Cook came to the match knowing the basics but wanting to put them into practice: “I roughly know how it’s done – I understand the basics – but I’ve never actually tried it before. So I’ll enjoy learning more about the exact shutter speeds to choose and put them into practice!” The feature does not state which shutter speeds she used, so it offers no specific speed to copy.

The useful lesson is about adapting technique: tracking a moving player, preventing focus from jumping to intervening bodies and taking control when the subject’s distance is stable. Cook’s experience also shows the practical change from planned portrait work to reacting to live action.

It is not evidence that the EOS R50 matches the EOS R5 Mark II for professional assignments, or that one body guarantees dramatic football images. Without the lens and exposure details or a controlled test, the feature supports no technical ranking of the cameras.
