In a 2020 study, chemists reported what they called the first molecular barium fluoride, alongside a barium compound containing a direct, unsupported bond to tin. The work is about specially designed, ligand-supported molecules—not ordinary barium fluoride, BaF2, the familiar ionic solid. The authors’ results show how a bis(imino)carbazole-based ligand can make unusual barium compounds accessible for study.
What “molecular barium fluoride” means
Barium fluoride usually refers to BaF2, a bulk ionic solid. The 2020 paper describes something different: a discrete molecular barium fluoride complex held together with a supporting ligand. The authors characterize it as the first molecular barium fluoride. Calling it “non-ionic” is a shorthand distinction from the bulk salt; it should not be read to mean that every bond in the complex is wholly covalent.

The priority claim is the authors’ report, rather than an independent survey of every earlier barium compound. Their paper, “Bis(imino)carbazolate: A Master Key for Barium Chemistry,” appeared in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, volume 59, issue 23, pages 9120–9126. Wiley lists first publication on 24 February 2020; PubMed gives an article date of 24 March 2020 and issue publication on 2 June 2020. How the ligand opened a route into barium chemistry
Barium is challenging to work with in molecular chemistry. Chapple and coauthors used a readily available bis(imino)carbazole-based proligand as a supporting framework. In the resulting carbazolate complexes, the ligand helps stabilize barium in unusual molecular arrangements, providing what the authors describe as a convenient entry point into molecular barium chemistry.

The study reports several solution-stable heteroleptic barium species—complexes containing barium alongside different types of bound groups—including fluoride, amide, iodide, stannylide and silanylide compounds. This matters because it extends the range of barium-containing molecules that can be prepared and characterized; it does not establish that the fluoride complex has a commercial or practical application.
The reported barium–tin bond
The paper also describes a barium stannylide with an unsupported Ba–Sn bond. “Unsupported” here distinguishes the direct barium–tin connection from a situation where the atoms are merely near one another through a bridging group or associated as a contact ion pair. The authors’ abstract summarizes the findings: “The syntheses and structural features for the first molecular barium fluoride and the first barium stannylide, with an unsupported Ba-Sn bond, are described.”

The same study reports a barium silanylide. For both the stannylide and silanylide, the authors used density functional theory (DFT) to analyze bonding. Their calculations describe the barium–tetrelide bonds as predominantly ionic, with a small covalent contribution. That is the paper’s calculated interpretation of these particular compounds, not a universal description of barium bonding.

What the work establishes—and what it does not
This is a fundamental synthetic and structural chemistry result: a ligand platform enabled the authors to report a molecular barium fluoride and a stannylide featuring a direct, unsupported Ba–Sn bond, as well as other ligand-supported barium species. It is not a report of a new consumer material, product, or demonstrated application.
