Comparing AI model costs across provider dashboards and spreadsheets can leave developers guessing whether the numbers are current. In an Aug. 29, 2026, DEV Community article, builder Khaerul Anwar describes creating EidosStack AI Gateway to make per-model token prices visible before a request is sent. The idea is useful, but the article’s catalog, pricing and savings figures are the builder’s own claims—not an independent audit.
What the gateway is meant to solve
When an application can use models from several providers, estimating cost means comparing separate price lists and keeping track of which figures apply to input, output and cached tokens. Anwar says he built EidosStack AI Gateway after finding that process cumbersome and prone to stale numbers.

He describes the product as a hosted software API gateway—not a hardware device—that provides one OpenAI-compatible endpoint and API key for models from multiple providers. The article names DeepSeek, Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s GPT, Google’s Gemini, Alibaba’s Qwen, Moonshot’s Kimi and Zhipu’s GLM. Anwar says the catalog includes 48 or more models; neither that count nor current availability was independently verified.
How its cost-visibility feature is described
The article says a public pricing table lists input, output and cache-token prices by model and refreshes every 30 seconds. That can make it easier to compare stated rates before choosing a model or sending a request. Anwar summarizes the intended benefit as seeing what a request will cost before sending it, rather than discovering the expense on an invoice.

That is a description of the pricing-table workflow, not a guarantee that the table predicts a request’s final charge exactly. Actual cost depends on the tokens used and the applicable provider and gateway prices. The article does not establish how every request is calculated or reconciled, so developers should treat the table as a planning aid and check the gateway’s current billing details.
Billing controls and the claimed savings
Anwar says the service uses pay-as-you-go billing without a subscription: users create an API key, can set a spending limit for that key, and top up when needed. He describes billing as denominated in Indonesian rupiah (IDR), with a USD reference shown. These are terms reported in the 2026 article, not independently confirmed current terms.

The article also claims gateway prices can be up to 50% below official provider rates. That figure is an unverified comparison by the builder: no model-by-model sample, comparison method or independent validation is supplied. “Up to” is not a typical or guaranteed discount, and it should not be used as a savings expectation without checking current prices for the specific models and token categories involved.

Keeping prices current
Anwar says maintaining accurate prices proved harder than expected because providers change their rates and require ongoing re-verification. A displayed refresh cadence does not, by itself, establish that every upstream price change is reflected immediately or that the source prices have been checked independently. For a cost-sensitive application, confirm how the gateway updates and verifies rates.

Compatibility beyond a familiar endpoint
The article identifies tool calling and streaming as particularly challenging parts of implementing OpenAI compatibility. A shared endpoint can simplify provider access, but the compatibility label alone does not show that every model supports every API feature in the same way. Before migrating an application, test the specific features it depends on, including tool calls and streamed responses.
Limits as protection against runaway usage
Anwar’s design observation is that small teams may value per-key spending limits more than sophisticated routing: an accidental loop can consume a balance. This is a builder’s lesson, not a formal study or survey. A limit can help contain exposure, but teams should verify what the limit covers and how it behaves when reached before relying on it as a safeguard.

How to assess a gateway for your own workload
The article does not compare EidosStack with other gateways, so it cannot establish which service is best. A practical evaluation should focus on the requirements that affect both compatibility and cost:
- Model coverage: Check that the exact models and provider variants your application needs are currently available.
- API behavior: Test tool calling, streaming and any other features your application uses rather than assuming they work uniformly across the catalog.
- Price transparency: Confirm that input, output and cached-token rates are shown separately where applicable, and ask how often upstream changes are verified.
- Cost controls: Check whether limits apply per key, what happens when a limit is reached, and whether usage can be monitored before a balance is depleted.
- Billing details: Confirm the billing currency, top-up process and current terms for the region and account you will use.
For a production workload, compare the gateway’s current listed rates with the relevant provider rates for the same model and token categories. Then run a small test request and inspect the recorded usage and charge. That verifies the path your application actually uses without treating a broad savings claim as a substitute for a like-for-like comparison.
