An idle game can include a minigame, but the minigame should not hold the core progression hostage. If a player gets bored of it, they should still have a clear route through the main game. When a minigame is indispensable, players who dislike it experience it as a gate, not as a feature.
This is a design argument, not a measured finding. The sources below are qualitative: developer interviews, design analyses and an academic paper. None of them tests optional minigames against retention, revenue or satisfaction, so this article makes no such claims.

Why idle games are especially sensitive to this
Idle games are built around progress that continues without constant input. Research on idle-game design describes inactivity, timed progress and automation as part of the genre’s structure (NSF PAR paper on idle game design). The paper does not test minigames. The following point is my inference: a minigame that demands repeated attention changes what the game is asking of the player, especially if its rewards are essential.

A player who chose a game partly because it runs by itself can find that a required minigame breaks that bargain.

What the sources do and do not show
Idle games can be designed to let players stop
Interviews with developers in “It Started as a Joke”: On the Design of Idle Games show some designers wanted players to be able to leave rather than scale endlessly. The excerpt attributes to Frank Lantz, designer of Universal Paperclips, the wish for a game with “a start, a middle and an end and have a dramatic arc and then at the end, it’s done and it lets you go.” The same material includes a developer saying an ending can signal that it is okay to stop playing, but the passage does not name that speaker. That is the broader principle: a good idle game respects the player’s right to be finished with parts of it.
Prestige is a renewal tool, and it has been optional
Game Developer’s The Math of Idle Games, Part III describes prestige as a reset that offers a multiplier and a renewed climb. It also helps developers manage large numbers and tie progress to slower growth. In a GameAnalytics interview, Fluffy Fairy Games said it did not see pushing players into prestige in Idle Miner Tycoon as necessary. That describes the design at the time of the interview, not necessarily the game today.

A 2019 GDC deconstruction of Idle Miner Tycoon reports that players could expand mines while keeping their originals, without needing a full prestige. These examples concern prestige, not minigames, but they show that layered progression need not force one path.
More mechanics are not automatically better
In a wappier interview, Rimmy Spanjer discusses the risk of introducing too many mechanics too early and the difficulty of holding interest beyond the first session. That is commentary, not a quantified result. It supports caution about adding mechanics that the player must master.

Five questions to test a minigame’s role
These are my proposed evaluation axes, not rules established by the sources.
1. Is it required for core progression?
If the main game stalls without it, it is a gate. Optional side rewards are a different thing.

2. Is there a comprehensible route without it?
A player who ignores the minigame for weeks should still see a path forward, not an unexplained wall.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute3. Does its reward stay useful, or can the core game outgrow it?
A reward that matters early can become trivial later. That is healthy: the minigame fades as the core game supplies its own way forward.

4. Can it be automated, played in bursts or left alone?
Once novelty wears off, players need a way to stop engaging without penalty. Automation unlocks, offline-friendly rewards and short sessions all serve this.
5. Is it genuinely different play?
A minigame that repeats what the core loop already does is a chore. One that offers a different pace or skill gives players a reason to choose it.

| Axis | Minigame that can stop mattering | Minigame that becomes a gate |
|---|---|---|
| Progression dependence | Side reward; core route exists | Key upgrades or unlocks locked behind it |
| Reward longevity | Declines in importance as the core game scales | Stays essential at every stage |
| Time and attention | Bursts, automation or ignoring it are all safe | Needs regular active sessions |
| Distinct play | Offers a different activity | Duplicates or interrupts the core loop |
What to do as a designer
- Give the minigame an honest role, such as a boost, a change of pace or a bonus, and say so in the game.
- Keep a viable core route for players who stop engaging with it.
- Let its rewards taper in relative importance, or offer automation later.
- Test with players who dislike it, not only those who enjoy it.
Players on forums ask exactly this, with threads such as “Do you Enjoy Mini-Games in Idle Games?” Those threads are anecdotal and do not show representative opinion, but they show the question is live. Optional does not mean worthless: a minigame players choose to return to is worth more than one they are forced through.
