A Look Inside the Deep-Sea Graveyard for Dead Spacecraft

Point Nemo is a remote South Pacific target for some controlled spacecraft reentries. Many objects burn up; surviving debris may be directed toward an ocean region.

Point Nemo is a remote patch of the South Pacific used as a target region for controlled reentries of some large retired spacecraft. The “spacecraft cemetery” is shorthand, not a neat pile of intact satellites: many objects burn up in the atmosphere, while fragments likely to survive can be directed toward a distant ocean area.

Where is Point Nemo?

Point Nemo lies at 48°52.6′S, 123°23.6′W in the South Pacific. NOAA identifies it as the ocean location farthest from land: the nearest land is about 2,688 kilometers away. That isolation is why the area is associated with controlled spacecraft disposal.

The name “Point Nemo” refers to a location, but spacecraft disposal uses a broad ocean target area rather than a precisely mapped spot containing a known collection of intact machines. The phrase “satellite graveyard” can also mean something different in space: a graveyard orbit is a higher orbit where some retired spacecraft are moved, not an ocean destination.

Why send retired spacecraft out of orbit?

Leaving defunct hardware in orbit can create collision hazards for operating spacecraft. A collision can produce more debris, which in turn raises the risk of further collisions—a cascading hazard often called the Kessler Effect. When a large object is unlikely to burn up completely, controlled reentry toward a remote ocean region can reduce the chance that surviving pieces fall near populated areas.

There is no single end-of-life route for every spacecraft. NASA’s explanation distinguishes among atmospheric burnup, disposal into a remote ocean region, and moving some spacecraft farther from Earth into graveyard orbits:

  • Smaller satellites in low orbit: Engineers can use a spacecraft’s remaining fuel to slow it, bringing it into the atmosphere to burn up.
  • Large objects with surviving debris likely: A controlled reentry can aim fragments toward an unpopulated ocean region.
  • Some objects in higher orbits: They may be moved farther from Earth into a graveyard orbit rather than brought down to the ocean.

Which route makes sense depends on factors including the spacecraft’s altitude, its size and construction, the likelihood that pieces will survive reentry, and whether its reentry path can be controlled.

What actually reaches the ocean?

A planned ocean reentry does not mean an entire spacecraft stays intact and sinks. Smaller satellites may burn up during atmospheric reentry. Larger structures can break apart, with some material burning away and some fragments surviving to reach the ocean. “Cemetery” describes the intended disposal region, not a complete inventory of craft resting on the seafloor.

The purpose of targeting a remote area is to reduce risk to people on land; it does not establish that every fragment reaches the water or that the location has no environmental impact. The available sources do not establish a verified count of spacecraft objects on the Point Nemo seafloor.

How the ISS is expected to be deorbited

The International Space Station is a prominent example of a large structure planned for controlled disposal. NASA’s FY 2027 budget request places the station’s planned end of operational life in 2030 and describes a controlled deorbit toward an uninhabited ocean region. Those dates are planning milestones, not guarantees.

NASA says SpaceX received the U.S. Deorbit Vehicle development contract in June 2024. The project’s cost and schedule baselines were approved in February 2026, and delivery of the vehicle is scheduled for late 2028. NASA says the launch service will be procured separately. At the time of the 2024 award announcement, NASA described the development contract’s potential value as $843 million; that was the potential award-time contract value, not a statement of final cost or the total cost of deorbiting the station.

Is Point Nemo’s environment protected from harm?

Remoteness is not the same as ecological emptiness. Research on microbial communities in the South Pacific Gyre, including work described by the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, provides context for life in the broader region. Reporting on the area has described low biomass, but that is not evidence that the ecosystem is lifeless or that spacecraft debris has no effect.

The reviewed sources do not quantify a specific seabed impact from decades of spacecraft debris at Point Nemo. Another environmental question arises higher up: a peer-reviewed PNAS study examines metals from spacecraft reentry in stratospheric aerosol particles. It investigates possible atmospheric consequences; it does not by itself establish a specific health or climate effect.

So Point Nemo is best understood as a remote target for reducing the risks associated with uncontrolled debris on land—not as a proven harmless dumping ground. The ocean and atmospheric questions are distinct, and the available evidence does not settle the local ecological effects of deposited debris.
