The server must check current authorization before sending sensitive data and stop the stream if permission no longer applies. Authentication at connection time and authorization for later events are separate decisions.
Why an open connection does not preserve access
Opening a stream establishes a connection; it does not freeze the user’s roles, group memberships, resource access, or session state for the connection’s entire lifetime. Those can change while the stream remains open. Treating the initial handshake as continuing permission can therefore expose data after access has been revoked.

The right control point is the server, immediately before it sends a sensitive payload or privileged event. If the authorization check fails, stop sending protected events and close the stream. The applicable policy and how quickly revocation must take effect depend on the data and the consequences of stale access. Auth By Example’s practical guidance describes possible approaches, not a universal standard.

There is no single revalidation schedule that fits every stream. Choose a mechanism based on the sensitivity of the data, the required speed of revocation, the volume of events, the cost of authorization checks, and whether the system can reliably signal policy changes.
#1 Best Overall
- Check before sensitive events: Re-authorize before sending events that expose protected data or perform a privileged function.
- Revalidate on an interval: Periodic checks can bound how long stale access persists when checking every event is impractical. The acceptable interval depends on the application’s revocation requirements.
- Respond to version changes: If the system tracks session, membership, or policy versions, a change signal can trigger a fresh check or terminate affected streams. This depends on the signal being reliable and promptly delivered.
These approaches can be combined. Whatever the trigger, a failed check should prevent further protected delivery, and any reconnection should undergo fresh authentication and authorization. Automatic reconnect is a transport behavior, not evidence that the user still has access.
MCP Streamable HTTP separates stream behavior from permission
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) Streamable HTTP specification dated 2026-07-28 distinguishes an SSE response associated with an ordinary request from a long-lived notification stream. The ordinary response carries notifications related to that request and should end with its final response. A subscriptions/listen request, by contrast, opens a long-lived stream for selected change notifications. The specification puts it this way: “Long-lived notification streams are obtained by sending a subscriptions/listen request.”

Under that specification, closing an ordinary request’s SSE response cancels that request. These lifecycle rules describe how MCP streams work; they do not grant continuing permission to send protected content. Servers still need to apply their own authorization policy to each relevant delivery. The details here are specific to the 2026-07-28 specification; check the version your implementation uses rather than assuming earlier transport behavior applies.

The MCP specification recommends sending X-Accel-Buffering: no when initiating SSE to limit proxy buffering, and encourages periodic SSE comment lines as keep-alives for long-lived streams. These measures address delivery and idle connections, not whether a user remains authorized. The same specification says its current revision does not support resuming SSE streams via Last-Event-ID; do not assume that feature is available in this version.

Choose browser credentials for the client’s needs
Browser credential delivery is a separate design choice from continuing authorization. The agents-inc SSE implementation guide describes credentialed cookies with the browser’s EventSource API. It also notes that EventSource does not allow arbitrary request headers; fetch-based streaming is an alternative when a client needs an Authorization header or more control over cancellation.
Whichever client mechanism you choose, validate authorization on the server before protected events are sent. Client-held credentials and an open connection do not replace that check.
