A developer who writes as Layton described a personal assistant running on a mini PC at home in a DEV Community post dated September 27, 2026. It captures notes, organizes project records, schedules planning and review, and processes some health data. This is one person’s implementation, not a benchmark or an audited security review. The design choices are still worth studying, especially how it separates event history from current state and where it admits that data leaves the house.
What runs on the mini PC
The setup combines four main pieces, each with a narrow job:

- OpenClaw handles conversation. Its Gateway runs directly on the host machine.
- LifeOS is the author’s workspace for records and files: a SQLite database plus a Vault of ordinary Markdown files.
- n8n runs scheduled workflows and moves data. It runs in a container with its database, an internal-network entrance, Gitea and other services.
- TickTick holds selected daily actions. Longer-term project state stays in the Vault.
The author says this helps with daily task planning, project tracking and health information management. The post does not name the mini PC or give its processor, memory, storage, operating system, cost, power draw or performance. It therefore sets no minimum hardware requirement, and nothing here should be read as one.

The central design idea is keeping history and current state apart. In the author’s words: “The event log answers ‘When did someone say this?’ The project files answer ‘What should I do next?’”

The capture trail: SQLite
A quick spoken or typed note is interpreted, written by a narrow capture script to SQLite on the home machine, and acknowledged with a record number. The captures.db trail records what was said and when. The capture path cannot edit project files or mark work complete. Adding a capture and editing a specific record are separate actions. The design aims to keep missing or uncertain context as it is, rather than inventing a date, task or workout detail.

What happens when yesterday’s task shows up again
Morning planning reads recent captures alongside open project files. In the evening, the assistant looks for evidence of delivery before changing longer-term project state. A TickTick checkmark is not treated as proof that work was delivered or accepted. A task can be ticked off in the daily list while the project file still shows it open, until something shows it was actually done.

Scheduling and health data
n8n owns the scheduled morning planning, evening review and webhook workflows. OpenClaw is invoked for task context and document work. The health workflow branches into workouts, sleep and body metrics. It prepares incoming data, merges it with existing records, stores it in n8n Data Tables and combines the results before responding. These health records are separate from the LifeOS capture database.
Data can arrive from a phone sync app or a custom MCP tool. The phone route goes to a public HTTPS entrance on a cloud host running Caddy. That entrance checks authorization before forwarding eligible requests to n8n at home. What gets written depends on the submitted fields and the workflow results. The post makes no claim that derived values are clinically valid or a substitute for professional medical interpretation.

The author’s caution: “A private network and a home server give me more control; they do not cancel the homework on permissions.” Application authentication and permissions still matter, and the public forwarding route needs particular care.

What “at home” does and doesn’t mean
Most files stay on the mini PC, but not every request does. Depending on the call, context sent to an external model can leave the house, and health uploads pass through the cloud host. The post names no model provider, retention policy or full threat model. That is enough reason not to describe this setup as fully private or secure. Anyone copying it would need to settle those questions for themselves.

Versioning and backup
Gitea at home versions the Vault and is configured to sync it to GitHub. That covers committed files, not necessarily the SQLite events, the n8n database, workflow settings or secrets. Those need their own backup and restore work. The post does not describe a tested full-system restore, and the author puts it plainly: “One successful sync does not prove the whole system will rise intact after a machine failure.”
Lessons if you build something similar
- Decide where data lives. The design splits host-local SQLite and Markdown from n8n Data Tables and data in transit through a cloud host.
- Pick the remote route deliberately. A private tailnet and an authorized public HTTPS path carry different risks.
- Separate state. Keep appendable event history apart from current project files and task-list status, and require evidence before marking work done.
- Define recovery scope. Repository sync for the Vault is not a backup of databases, workflows, settings or secrets.
- Don’t pick hardware from this post. It confirms only that a mini PC was used.
One small detail from the post: the author gives about 450 kcal as a rough estimate for one described breakfast. It is a personal estimate, not a verified nutrition figure.
