A hard disk sector is a unit of storage that a drive uses to organize and address data. The term can refer to the smaller, host-visible logical sector or the drive’s underlying physical sector—and on modern drives, those sizes may differ.
What a hard disk sector means
Disk storage is divided into units that a computer can address. A logical sector is the unit used for logical block addressing: it is the size of the addressable slice the host sees. A physical sector is the drive’s underlying unit for completing read and write operations.

Historically, software commonly assumed that a sector was 512 bytes. That assumption no longer describes every drive: a disk can expose 512-byte logical sectors while working with 4 KB physical sectors, or expose 4 KB for both. Microsoft’s Advanced Format compatibility guidance explains the distinction and its compatibility implications.
Logical and physical sector formats
| Format | Logical sector size | Physical sector size | What the host sees |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512n | 512 bytes | 512 bytes | 512-byte logical sectors backed by 512-byte physical sectors. |
| 512e | 512 bytes | 4 KB | 512-byte logical sectors emulated over 4 KB physical sectors. |
| 4Kn | 4 KB | 4 KB | 4 KB logical sectors backed by 4 KB physical sectors. |
The names describe the relationship between the host-visible and underlying sizes. On a 512e drive, eight 512-byte logical sectors fit within one 4 KB physical sector. The drive still presents 512-byte units for addressing, while its physical work is organized in 4 KB units.

Why the distinction matters
Software, storage controllers, and operating systems need to handle the sector format they encounter. Older software may assume that sectors are 512 bytes, while a 4Kn drive exposes 4 KB logical sectors. Support depends on the particular operating-system version, updates, controller, and application; there is no single compatibility rule that applies to every setup.
Alignment can also affect I/O behavior. If a request or partition boundary does not line up with physical-sector boundaries, the drive or software may need to do extra work. Microsoft identifies alignment and applications that do not query or use physical-sector size as compatibility concerns. The precise effect depends on the device and the workload; a 512e drive does not necessarily perform the same extra operations for every write. Microsoft’s Hyper-V storage I/O guidance discusses writes on 512e disks in physical-sector units.

How a sector differs from a file-system cluster
A sector is a device-level unit used for storage addressing. A file-system cluster is an allocation unit used by the file system to manage space for files. They are related to storage, but they describe different layers and are not interchangeable terms.

Do not infer a drive’s format from its capacity, brand, or connection type. Check the exact model’s manufacturer specification for its logical and physical sector sizes, then confirm that the operating system, controller, and applications support the format. Manufacturer documentation also uses the 512n, 512e, and 4Kn terminology; for example, SanDisk’s support page on advanced-format 4 KB sector support describes these sizes for SSDs, so it should not be treated as evidence for every hard disk model.
