A training-load or recovery score is best used as a trend to discuss with your own training—not as a universal measure of readiness. Wearables estimate workout demands from recorded activity and interpret signals such as heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, and sleep. Their formulas differ, so a score from one brand cannot be directly compared with the same-looking score from another.
What does training load mean on a wearable?
Training load is an estimate of how demanding recorded exercise has been. It is not a direct measurement of fitness, fatigue, or the amount of training your body can safely handle. Manufacturers choose their own inputs, calculations, and time windows, so the term does not mean exactly the same thing on every device.

Garmin’s approach
Garmin describes its load metric as based on excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC), an estimate of exercise’s physiological impact and resulting recovery demand. In Garmin’s terminology, exercise load refers to an individual activity; acute load combines recent recorded activities. Garmin says its acute-load view uses a weighted moving average normalized to a seven-day window, with an activity’s influence fading over the following ten days. Those details describe Garmin’s system, not an industry-wide formula.
For a compatible Edge cycling-computer setup, Garmin says the EPOC estimate may use heart-rate-monitor and power-meter data. A chest strap is therefore an option for that compatible setup, not a universal requirement for every Garmin watch or every athlete.

Why logging matters
A load trend can only reflect the activity the system has captured. If you often forget to record sessions, remove the device during workouts, or use an activity mode that misses relevant signals, the picture may be incomplete. Garmin specifically advises recording activities with heart rate for a fuller view in its system.
What do recovery scores measure—and what can they tell you?
Recovery features commonly draw on overnight or resting signals such as HRV, resting heart rate, and sleep. An app combines or interprets those signals to produce a score or label. The score is an estimate, not a direct measurement of readiness and not a clinical assessment.
Use the underlying trends as context. For example, a pattern in sleep, HRV, or resting heart rate may help you notice that your recent routine differs from your usual pattern. It does not, by itself, establish why that change occurred or tell you whether a particular workout is safe.

International work on wearable measurement is ongoing. The World Health Organization’s report, published 3 February 2026, summarizes a specialist meeting held 10–12 June 2025 in Montreal. Its agenda included core metrics, device specifications, protocols, evidence assessment, and research needs. This is a developing measurement landscape, not grounds to treat every brand’s score as standardized.

A study example, with limits
In a 25 June 2025 press release, WHOOP described a study published in Nature Communications with Monash University and Harvard University. WHOOP said the analysis covered 14,689 members and more than 4 million nights. For its high-strain late-workout analysis, the company reported a 36-minute delay in sleep onset and a 22-minute reduction in sleep duration, along with changes in resting heart rate and HRV.
Those figures are company-reported findings about that study population and WHOOP data. They are not guaranteed effects for an individual, proof that every tracker measures sleep or recovery accurately, or a universal rule that every athlete should avoid evening exercise.
How should you choose a wearable for training load and recovery?
Start with the activities and habits you need to support, rather than searching for a single “most accurate” device. No independent named statistic in the available evidence establishes that current Garmin or WHOOP systems are more accurate than the other for training-load or recovery tracking.

| Decision | What to check |
|---|---|
| Sport and recording | Can the device record your sport and the signals relevant to it? Will you reliably log every session? |
| Load method | Does the maker explain the inputs, time window, and meaning of its load metric? |
| Recovery context | Can you see trends in signals such as HRV, resting heart rate, or sleep, and will those views help you make decisions? |
| Wear and charging | Can you wear it during training and sleep consistently, and is its charging routine practical for you? |
| Cost model | Is it a device purchase, a membership system, or both? Check current terms and total cost before choosing. |
| Ecosystem | Does the specific model work with your phone, sensors, bike computer, and training software? Confirm compatibility for that model. |
Garmin: a sports-watch approach
Garmin suits readers looking for a sports watch that records workouts and, on compatible devices, provides load and training-status metrics. Garmin says its training-status interpretation considers estimated VO₂ max and recent training volume and composition; devices that support HRV status include that perspective too. Support varies by model, so check the exact watch and sensor compatibility rather than assuming every Garmin device offers the same metrics.

WHOOP: a continuous-wear, membership-based approach
WHOOP describes its system as focused on continuous wear and insights related to recovery, strain, and sleep, with a membership. That approach may appeal if you want those views as an ongoing part of your routine. Confirm current membership terms, device details, and compatibility before committing.
These are different product approaches, not evidence of a universal winner. A sports watch organized around workout recording and a membership wearable organized around continuous tracking may suit different routines.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you train when your recovery score is low?
Do not let one score make the decision for you. Consider how you feel, any symptoms, perceived effort, recent training, sleep, and actual performance alongside the device’s trend. If the score is unexpectedly low, check whether you wore the device consistently and recorded your workouts; missing data can make its picture less representative.
If you feel unwell or have concerning symptoms, treat those as more important than a reassuring app label and seek appropriate medical advice. A wearable score alone cannot diagnose illness or clear you to train. For everyday training choices, use the data as one input: it can prompt you to look more closely at your context, but it cannot replace your judgment or a clinician’s assessment.
Quick Recap
How to make the data more useful
- Build a consistent baseline. Wear the device in the way its system expects and record activities reliably, including heart rate where relevant to the metric.
- Read the metric definition. Check whether a displayed load refers to one workout or a rolling period, and what signals feed a recovery score.
- Look for patterns, not isolated verdicts. Compare changes with your own usual trends and training context, rather than comparing numbers across brands.
- Make a decision using more than the score. Combine the wearable’s information with symptoms, perceived effort, sleep, and performance; adjust training if the full picture warrants it.
