Selenium is an open-source project for automating web browsers, not a single test application. Its three main tools serve different jobs: WebDriver lets you write browser automation in code, Selenium IDE records and replays browser actions, and Selenium Grid runs WebDriver sessions remotely across browsers and machines. Choose based on how you need to author and run automation; Selenium does not replace a test framework, test design, or CI system.
What is Selenium?
Selenium is a family of tools and libraries for controlling web browsers. The project describes its purpose simply: “Selenium automates browsers. That’s it!” Selenium’s documentation covers the components and their roles.
For coded automation, WebDriver is the central interface: a program sends commands through a language binding, which communicates with a browser-specific driver to control the browser. The Selenium project describes WebDriver as a W3C Recommendation. Selenium provides browser automation, but you choose a test framework and decide what to verify, how to structure tests, and how to run them in your development or CI environment. WebDriver documentation
WebDriver, Selenium IDE, and Grid: which component fits?
| Component | Best fit | What it does | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| WebDriver | Coded browser regression tests and automation | Controls browsers through language bindings and browser-specific drivers. | Reliable suites require deliberate locators, waits, assertions, and ongoing maintenance. |
| Selenium IDE | Quick bug reproductions and exploratory testing | A browser extension that records and replays actions. | Recorded flows can be a useful starting point, but recording alone does not make a durable regression suite. |
| Selenium Grid | Remote sessions across browsers, versions, operating systems, or machines | Routes WebDriver scripts to browser instances and supports distributed and parallel execution. | Requires deployment, access controls, and tests that are safe to run independently in parallel. |
This division follows the Selenium project’s own guidance: WebDriver for robust browser-based regression suites, IDE for quick reproduction or automation-aided exploration, and Grid for distributing tests across environments. Selenium project overview and Grid documentation

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Is Selenium still used for test automation?
Selenium remains an actively documented open-source browser automation project. The official site continues to describe WebDriver, IDE, and Grid as complementary options, and its downloads page publishes language bindings and Selenium Server releases. That establishes ongoing project activity; it does not, by itself, quantify adoption or prove that Selenium is the best fit for every team’s needs.
It is a practical choice when your team needs browser automation in code, wants to use an existing language and test runner, or needs to run sessions across browser and operating-system combinations. IDE can help explore a flow or preserve a quick reproduction. Grid becomes relevant when local execution is insufficient and you have a reason to distribute sessions. Check browser support and the current Selenium release before committing to a setup.
How do I install Selenium and manage browser drivers?
For local WebDriver automation, you need a Selenium language binding and an installed browser. Selenium Manager is used by Selenium bindings by default to manage drivers and browsers, which can reduce manual driver setup. It does not install or choose your test framework, write tests, or decide what your tests should assert. Follow the installation instructions for your chosen language in Selenium’s getting-started documentation.

- Choose a language binding. Use the language already familiar to your team or present in the application’s test stack. Install Selenium using the official instructions for that language.
- Install or confirm a supported browser. Selenium needs a browser available in the environment where the test runs.
- Write a small WebDriver test. Use your chosen test framework for test discovery and assertions; Selenium is the browser-control layer, not the framework.
- Run locally and inspect failures. Confirm that the page loads, your locators identify the intended elements, and waits account for asynchronous changes. Avoid relying on timing assumptions that only hold on your machine.
- Add browsers or remote execution when needed. First make tests stable in one local environment. Then expand coverage or use Grid if your execution needs justify the added setup.
The exact install command depends on the selected language and package manager; use the official language-specific instructions rather than copying a command for a different environment. Getting started
How do I run Selenium tests across multiple browsers?
WebDriver can automate supported browsers through their browser-specific driver implementations. To cover more than one browser, configure your tests to run against each browser available in the relevant environment, then add browser versions or operating systems when your compatibility requirements call for them. The browser and driver must be available to the execution environment; Selenium Manager can help manage drivers and browsers by default.
For remote sessions, Grid routes WebDriver requests to browser instances. This is useful when sessions need to run on other machines or when a team needs distributed execution across browser and operating-system combinations. Parallelism is safe only when tests are designed to be independent: avoid shared mutable test data, conflicting account state, or order-dependent setup.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
For a small project, begin with local browser coverage. Introduce remote execution when local capacity, environment coverage, or execution time makes it worthwhile, and account for the extra operational and security work.
Do I need Selenium Grid?
No. Grid is for routing WebDriver sessions to remote browser instances and distributing execution; it is not a prerequisite for local browser automation. Start with local WebDriver tests if one machine and its installed browser meet your needs.
Grid deployment choices
- Standalone: all Grid components run in one process on one machine. The quick-start configuration listens for RemoteWebDriver requests on
localhost:4444by default. - Hub and Node: a multi-machine deployment option that separates the coordinating Hub from browser-running Nodes.
- Distributed: a deployment option for distributing Grid components across machines.
The Grid quick start lists Java 11 or higher, installed browsers, and the Selenium Server JAR as requirements. Selenium Manager can configure drivers when enabled. See the official Grid quick start for the current setup instructions and deployment details.

Protect Grid as infrastructure
Do not expose a Grid endpoint to untrusted networks. Selenium warns that an exposed Grid can let third parties reach internal web applications and files or run custom binaries. Restrict network access and treat the endpoint as a security-sensitive service when planning deployment. Grid security guidance

Selenium is for controlling a browser through automation. If your immediate need is a screenshot or PDF from a URL rather than a test that interacts with a browser, ScreenshotNeo is a separate website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is not a replacement for Selenium test design or browser interaction tests.

For a one-call screenshot, use the API with your access key and target URL. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details.

Which Selenium approach should you start with?
- Choose WebDriver for repeatable, coded browser tests that need assertions and maintenance.
- Choose Selenium IDE for quick recording, exploratory work, or a reproducible bug flow; expect to refine any automation intended for long-term regression coverage.
- Choose Grid when tests must run against remote browser instances or be distributed across environments, and you can secure and operate that infrastructure.
- Choose a test framework and CI process separately; Selenium does not supply a complete testing strategy.
Current Selenium version
The Selenium downloads page listed version 4.49.0 as stable for Java, Python, JavaScript, Ruby, .NET/C#, and Selenium Server, with a release date of September 9, 2026. This is a dated snapshot, not a promise that the version remains current: verify the official downloads page and browser compatibility when installing.
