Yes. In the United States, LATISSE (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is a prescription treatment indicated for inadequate eyelashes. It can increase lash length, thickness and darkness, but the main clinical measure was overall eyelash prominence—not a guaranteed amount of length gained. Treatment involves nightly application, and lash growth is expected to move back toward its pretreatment level after stopping.
What the treatment is—and what it is meant to treat
LATISSE contains bimatoprost 0.03% and is labeled in the U.S. for eyelash hypotrichosis, meaning inadequate or not enough eyelashes. The FDA approved it for that use in December 2008. The prescription indication is for increasing lash growth, including length, thickness and darkness; it is not simply a general cosmetic serum.

What the clinical results show
In the adult pivotal study, 278 participants were randomized to LATISSE or vehicle and treated for four months. At week 16, 107 of 137 people receiving LATISSE (78%) had at least a one-grade improvement from baseline on the Global Eyelash Assessment, compared with 26 of 141 people receiving vehicle (18%). Improvements were statistically significant at weeks 8, 12 and 16.

This endpoint rated overall eyelash prominence. The 78% figure is the share of treated participants who met that assessment threshold; it is not a 78% increase in lash length and does not guarantee an individual result.
How labeled application works
- Apply the treatment nightly, following the product labeling and your prescriber’s directions.
- Place one drop on the supplied disposable sterile applicator. Draw the applicator along the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the lashes.
- Use a new applicator for the other eyelid. Each applicator is for one use only; discard it after application.
- Blot any excess solution. Do not apply it to the lower eyelid.
The label says eyelash growth is expected to return toward its pretreatment level after treatment is discontinued.

Risks to discuss with a prescriber
The label warns that eyelid or iris pigmentation can occur. Iris pigmentation is likely to be permanent. Other warnings include hair growth outside the application area, possible effects on intraocular pressure, intraocular inflammation and macular edema. In the adult trial, the most common adverse reactions were eye itching, conjunctival hyperemia (redness) and skin hyperpigmentation, each reported in approximately 3% to 4% of participants.

How it differs from cosmetic lash options
Bimatoprost is a prescription treatment with a labeled medical indication and specific safety warnings.
