It gives developers and curious Mac owners a way to explore the operating system, but it is an unofficial build project—not a native Mac port or a dependable daily-use setup. Real Bluetooth pairing is unavailable, some graphics and input behavior is rough, and the virtual machine lacks important hardware-backed security protections.
What gbos-vm does—and what it doesn’t
The project starts with Google’s ARM64 recovery image for a Dell Googlebook, swaps hardware-specific vendor components for virtual-device components from Google’s Cuttlefish project, then runs the guest through QEMU. For graphics, it bridges Vulkan through MoltenVK to Apple’s Metal stack. The repository says it fetches the image rather than redistributing it, and verifies downloaded files against pinned hashes. gbos-vm project documentation

The result is a real Googlebook OS guest running in a virtual machine, with GPU acceleration and Chrome working, according to the project. It is not Googlebook OS installed natively on a Mac, nor evidence that the OS generally supports Apple hardware. The project’s documentation does not establish compatibility across every Apple Silicon generation or macOS release.

The developer’s stated motivation was to “poke at Googlebook OS without buying a Googlebook.” That makes the setup most relevant to developers exploring Android desktop behavior and technically comfortable enthusiasts willing to compile components and tolerate unfinished features. - Magic Keyboard is available with Touch ID, providing fast, easy and secure authentication for logins and to unlock your Mac.
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It features an extended layout, with document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys, which are great for gaming.
- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
What you need to build it
This is a toolchain, not a consumer app you can download and open. Reported prerequisites are an Apple Silicon Mac with at least 16 GB of RAM, Xcode Command Line Tools, Android SDK/NDK packages, a Java Development Kit, and roughly 60 GB of free storage for the build. Android Authority reported those requirements on October 8, 2026. Android Authority’s setup report
Build requirements can change; consult the repository’s current instructions before starting. Expect to fetch and compile project components, rather than simply install a ready-made virtual machine.
What works, and where the rough edges are
The limits below come from the project maintainer’s documentation, not independent performance testing. They describe implementation details and known gaps, not benchmark results.

- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE - Magic Keyboard with Touch ID connects wirelessly to your Mac via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH ANY MAC WITH APPLE SILICON - It pairs automatically with your Mac with Apple silicon so you can get to work right away. See the list of compatible devices above. Requires a Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 11.4 or later.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE - Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- QUICK UNLOCK WITH TOUCH ID - Touch ID gives you a fast, easy, secure way to unlock your Mac and sign in to apps and sites.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING - The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a woven USB-C to Lightning Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
- Bluetooth: If the Android Emulator is installed, the VM can expose a simulated radio. Real Bluetooth devices cannot pair through it, and USB Bluetooth dongle bridging has not been implemented.
- Display: The guest is capped at 60 fps because the QEMU build used by the project does not expose a refresh-rate setting.
- Graphics: Some flat-shaded WebGL content may render incorrectly. The guest is told a Vulkan extension is available even though MoltenVK does not provide it.
- Pointer input: Integrated pointer modes are experimental. The maintainer describes captured mouse input as the most reliable approach.
- Other behavior: Copying content out of the guest, right-click behavior, and long-session reliability had not received proper testing in the repository description. Audio was silent on one boot and worked on another.
Why it is not a daily-use machine
Googlebook OS expects hardware services that this virtual machine does not have, including a TPM and trusted hardware-backed key services. The project substitutes software KeyMint and Gatekeeper, so keys do not receive secure-element protection. Its modified vendor partition also lacks verified boot. The repository says the other partitions retain their original verity and SELinux remains enforcing, but those facts do not restore the missing vendor-partition verification or hardware-backed key protection. gbos-vm project documentation
There is also a local networking consideration when the Android Emulator is installed: the virtual Bluetooth radio listens on 127.0.0.1 without a password, so another program on the same Mac could connect and appear as a nearby Bluetooth device. The maintainer’s suggested mitigation is to turn Bluetooth off in Settings if this concerns you.
The project maintainer explicitly frames the setup as a development VM rather than a daily driver. Combined with incomplete peripheral support and untested behavior, that makes it a poor fit for work that depends on reliable sessions, trusted boot, secure key storage, or Bluetooth accessories.

How this differs from buying a Googlebook
Google describes Googlebook as a laptop category built on the Android technology stack and ChromeOS desktop foundations. Its initial device partners are Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Google’s official FAQ says Googlebook devices support Android apps directly and phone-app interaction; those platform capabilities should not be assumed to work perfectly in this unofficial VM. Google’s Googlebook announcement · Googlebook FAQ
A supported laptop is the more appropriate route for someone who wants a normal, supported device experience. The VM is useful for exploration, not as a substitute for the product category it imitates.
There are platform caveats even beyond virtualization. Google’s extension documentation says native messaging is not yet available on Googlebook OS: extensions that request it may install, but connection attempts can fail. It also lists ChromeOS-only extension APIs that Googlebook OS does not support. This is official platform guidance, not confirmation that the VM has separately tested every API. Chrome for Developers extension documentation
For organizations considering deployment, Google’s enterprise guidance says the 2026 Googlebook launch is aimed at consumers and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. Comprehensive management is planned to start rolling out in the second half of 2027. Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help
Quick Recap
Who should try it?
- Potentially a good fit: Developers curious about Android desktop behavior, app teams seeking an experimental environment, and enthusiasts comfortable building software and working around rough edges.
- A poor fit: Anyone who needs a supported Mac installation, dependable Bluetooth peripherals, polished pointer behavior, trusted boot, hardware-backed key protection, or a reliable operating system for everyday work.
