Yap Pat Yih separates AI-assisted work into two roles: a “Brain” session that investigates, makes decisions and writes a brief, and a fresh “Hand” session that carries it out. The point is not to use two different models; it is to separate planning from execution and make the handoff explicit. Pat Yih describes the method in his DEV Community article.
What the Brain-and-Hand split means
The Brain handles the work that requires understanding the goal and deciding how to approach it. In Pat Yih’s software workflow, it reads sources and investigates the repository without editing it. It proposes an approach, asks the owner numbered questions when a decision belongs to them, then produces a self-contained brief.

The Hand is a fresh session. It receives the brief, not the planning conversation, and executes the specified work. The brief defines what to change, what to avoid and how to report the result. This treats an AI tool like a delegate: the person responsible for the outcome makes the decisions that belong to them, then gives the executor a clear assignment.

1. Let the Brain investigate without changing the project
Give the Brain the goal and access to the relevant material. Its job is to understand the context and identify decisions—not to begin implementing. When a choice needs the owner’s judgment, it should ask a numbered question rather than silently choosing.

2. Turn the plan into a complete brief
Pat Yih’s brief outline gives the Hand enough context to work independently:
- Where to work and what to read.
- Actions that are prohibited or outside scope.
- Context explaining the purpose of the task.
- Standing project rules.
- Numbered implementation steps.
- A report-back request covering what changed beyond the request and what could not be completed.
A useful brief makes boundaries as clear as the requested work. Pat Yih says the report-back prompts help reveal unrequested changes and incomplete tasks.
3. Start a fresh Hand session and execute
Paste the brief into a new session. The Hand builds and, in Pat Yih’s workflow, verifies the result in a browser. It commits after each step with a human-readable subject, then reports in the format the brief requested. Pat Yih says it should not push, deploy or touch production unless the brief explicitly authorizes that work.

4. Review the report before the next assignment
The owner reviews the Hand’s report, resolves anything that needs a decision, and has the Brain write the next brief if more work is needed. The report is a review point, not a substitute for checking whether the work meets the goal.
What Pat Yih reports about the results
Pat Yih says a site rebuild took two days and involved one Brain session and six Hand sessions, with just over a hundred commits. In his account, the Brain wrote no code, and he reviewed six reports rather than a hundred commits. Those are figures from his own account, not independently verified evidence that the method will produce the same results elsewhere.
Why not plan and build in one session?
Pat Yih’s rationale is context and role separation. In a single long session, the planning discussion carries into execution; with a fresh Hand, the brief becomes the explicit boundary between judgment and implementation. That can make instructions and reporting easier to inspect. It is his stated workflow rationale, not a measured comparison proving that two sessions are always more effective.

Where the workflow can go wrong
An unresolved decision gets made by the Hand
If the brief leaves a choice open, the Hand may make a reasonable decision that does not match the owner’s intent. Pat Yih identifies this as a common failure point and recommends asking the Brain to surface unresolved decisions as numbered questions before it writes the brief.
A technical constraint blocks the plan
In one example from his article, the Hand found that a hosting adapter could not build for the intended platform and stopped to ask what to do. That is preferable to silently changing the target or taking an unapproved route: the owner can choose how to proceed.
The owner changes direction
Pat Yih also describes changing his mind about a two-step sign-in, which meant a later brief had to change the implementation plan. He mentions revising a logo form after reviewing it as well. The process allows for this kind of iteration: review the work, make the decision, then issue a revised brief.

Is this only for software?
No. Pat Yih says he uses the same division for keyword research and content briefs. The transferable idea is to separate a stage that investigates and plans from a stage that executes, then pass over a brief that states the goal, boundaries and expected report. The particular instructions will differ by task; software-specific steps such as browser verification and commits do not automatically apply to other work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the split is useful
The arrangement is most useful when a task has a meaningful planning stage, execution can be bounded by written instructions, and the owner wants to retain decisions that should not be delegated. Its value depends on the quality of the brief and the review loop—not on the labels “Brain” and “Hand” themselves.

Why not let one session plan and then build?
Pat Yih prefers a fresh execution session so the planning conversation does not carry into implementation; the written brief provides the handoff.
What goes wrong most often?
An open decision in the brief can lead the Hand to make a choice that is reasonable but wrong for the owner. Pat Yih recommends surfacing such choices as numbered questions before the brief is written.
Is this only for software?
No. Pat Yih says he also uses the division for keyword research and content briefs.
