A green test suite means only that the checks it contains passed. It does not prove that a page rendered correctly or that a user can complete the intended task. To catch the blank-page bug an agent may miss, pair automated tests with a browser check: confirm visible content, exercise the key interaction, inspect the rendered page and runtime errors, and use screenshot comparison when appearance matters.
Why is my page blank when all tests pass?
Tests can pass while a page is blank because a test result is bounded by its assertions. If a suite checks a helper function or a response code but never checks the page users see, it has not established that the expected content rendered. Playwright’s guidance recommends testing the same rendered output users see and interact with: Playwright Best Practices.

A green result is useful evidence about the checks that ran—not a general certificate that the feature works. A page may load without the expected content, a control may be present but unresponsive, or a JavaScript error may interfere with the experience. Each requires a check that observes the relevant outcome.
How do I make an AI coding agent check what it built?
Give verification a concrete user outcome, then have the agent gather evidence in a browser. A useful acceptance check identifies the route, the visible content or control that should appear, and what should happen after a representative action. That turns “it works” into something the agent can verify and report accurately.
#1 Best Overall
- Define the expected outcome. Specify the route, a distinctive visible heading or control, and the result of the main user action.
- Run the automated suite. Treat a pass as confirmation of the assertions in that suite, not as proof of untested rendering.
- Open the changed route in a browser. Check for the expected text or control, then perform the important interaction. Browser tools can inspect page content and screenshots, capture console errors, and exercise interactions; see Visual Studio Code’s guide to browser tools with agents.
- Inspect the rendered result and runtime feedback. Look at the page itself and review relevant console errors. If appearance is part of the acceptance criteria, compare a screenshot against an approved baseline.
- Report only checks actually performed. Keep a screenshot or trace with the verification report when the workflow supports it, and distinguish browser checks from tests that were not run.
Playwright provides page-state assertions as well as screenshot assertions. Its page assertions are documented in PageAssertions; general assertion guidance is available in Assertions.
Which checks catch which failures?
No single check covers every failure class. Choose checks according to the expected user outcome and the risk of the change.
| Check | What it observes | Useful for finding | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit or source-level test | A specific function or behavior exercised by its assertions | Regressions in the code path the test covers | That the full page rendered or that a user can complete a flow |
| Rendered-page assertion | Page state or user-visible output | Missing expected text, headings, or controls | That every interaction works or that the layout looks right |
| Browser interaction check | The outcome of an action such as navigation or submitting a form | Broken controls, navigation, or key user flows | That the page has no visual regression |
| Console and runtime inspection | Errors reported while the page runs | JavaScript problems that may affect the page | That the visible result is correct or that a specific error broke the user flow |
| Screenshot comparison | Rendered pixels against an expected image | Visual and layout changes, including a blank or substantially altered page | That controls behave correctly or that a visual difference is a defect rather than an intentional change |
Can a screenshot test catch a blank page?
It can catch a blank page when the blank render differs from the approved screenshot baseline. But a screenshot comparison is not a complete functional test: it cannot establish that a control works, and a changed image needs review to determine whether the difference is a regression or an intentional design update.

Playwright’s screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing the result with the expectation. That helps avoid comparing an image while it is still changing, but it does not remove the need to control the rendering environment or review the diff. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.

Keep screenshot comparisons repeatable
Rendering can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends using consistent environments for visual baselines. If those inputs change, a diff may reflect the environment rather than an application regression.
- Run baseline and comparison captures in the same browser and operating-system environment.
- Keep relevant rendering inputs, such as viewport and browser settings, consistent.
- Review screenshot diffs before updating a reference image; accepting a new baseline without review can hide a real regression.
How do I test what the user actually sees?
Use layered evidence, with each check tied to a user-visible expectation: assert that distinctive content or controls appear, perform the key interaction, inspect the rendered page, and review relevant runtime errors. Add screenshot comparison for areas where visual appearance is part of the acceptance criteria. Together, these checks address different failure classes without asking one test to prove more than it can.
Rank #4
There is no substantiated frequency estimate for how often blank-page defects escape passing automated tests in the cited official guidance. The practical conclusion does not depend on a percentage: if the suite never observes the rendered page or the relevant user flow, its green result cannot establish that either one works.
