A Bilingual Arabic/English (RTL + LTR) UX Checklist for Web Teams

Set page direction explicitly, keep language and direction separate, mark mixed Arabic and English runs, and test punctuation and forms in both RTL and LTR contexts.

For an Arabic-primary page, set dir="rtl" on the html element, declare the language separately with lang, and mark known English runs with local directional markup. Keep text in logical reading order; do not reverse strings by hand. Use this checklist to review content, design, implementation, forms, and QA.

1. Set language and direction independently

  • Declare the page or content region’s language with lang. It identifies the language; it does not set text direction.
  • Set the document’s base direction to match its primary script and reading flow. For an RTL document, use dir="rtl" on html, as described in the W3C RTL tutorial.
  • Set a local dir only on a section or component whose direction differs from the surrounding base direction. Avoid changing the whole page to handle one inline phrase.
  • Keep source text in logical reading order and let the Unicode bidirectional algorithm determine its visual presentation. Do not reverse Arabic or English strings manually.

Language and direction answer different questions. As the W3C explains in Authoring HTML: Handling Right-to-left Scripts, “Direction is a property of scripts, not language.” A language declaration is not a substitute for directional markup.

2. Mark mixed Arabic and English runs

Identify inline content that switches direction: for example, an English product name inside Arabic prose, or an Arabic phrase inside an English paragraph. When the direction of the phrase is known, tightly wrap that phrase in an element with the appropriate dir value. Use semantic markup where it fits the content, and nest markup if a phrase contains another directional run.

The W3C’s Inline markup and bidirectional text in HTML recommends: “If you know the direction of all the text involved, tightly wrap every opposite-direction phrase in markup, and use the dir attribute on that markup.” This keeps direction attached to the content it governs rather than relying on layout rules or hidden characters. The W3C tutorial likewise advises: “Avoid using CSS or Unicode control codes for managing direction where you can use markup.”

3. Handle punctuation at direction boundaries

Review punctuation where Arabic and Latin runs meet. Parentheses, quotation marks, separators, and adjacent numbers can behave unexpectedly because neutral characters take their visual placement from their directional context.

  1. Check the rendered phrase in context, including the characters immediately before and after each direction change.
  2. If structural markup does not put punctuation on the intended side, follow the targeted procedure in WAI’s H34 technique to examine the direction change and adjacent neutral characters.
  3. Consider a narrowly placed left-to-right mark (LRM) or right-to-left mark (RLM) only when it resolves a specific punctuation-placement problem. Do not scatter invisible marks through content as a general layout strategy.

4. Choose direction handling for forms and inserted text

Use explicit direction when content’s direction is known. For an input or inserted value whose direction cannot be known in advance, consider dir="auto"; the W3C tutorial identifies it as relevant to inputs, pre content, and inserted content.

5. Review with a concrete QA checklist

  • Two page contexts: review the component in both Arabic-primary (RTL) and English-primary (LTR) contexts. A component that appears correct in one base direction may not be correct in the other.
  • Input cases: test an empty field, Arabic-first input, English-first input, mixed-script input, numerals, and punctuation. These are useful QA cases derived from the documented directionality concerns, not results of testing a particular product or browser.
  • Markup and rendering: inspect the source markup as well as the rendered view. Confirm that direction is expressed structurally and that source text remains in logical order.
  • Defect reports: record the surrounding text, base direction, boundaries of the inline runs, and punctuation that triggers the issue. This makes direction changes and adjacent neutral characters easier to diagnose.
  • Supported technologies: validate behavior against the team’s supported browser and assistive-technology matrix. The cited guidance does not establish compatibility results for any specific combination.

6. Select the approach that matches the content

Decision Use
Direction known or unknown? Use an explicit dir value for known-direction content; consider dir="auto" for user-entered or inserted content whose direction is not known ahead of time.
Structural or character-level control? Prefer markup and dir to express direction. Evaluate LRM or RLM only for a specific punctuation or compatibility issue.
Page-level or local scope? Set the document’s base direction once, then mark differing sections or inline runs at their point of use.
Language or direction metadata? Declare both where needed: lang identifies language; dir sets direction.
