If your interface only needs a straightforward color input, a smaller, simpler component may be a better fit.
Why switch from a basic React color picker?
In his DEV Community article, Sohail Khan describes basic pickers as limiting when an interface needs image-based color selection, a wheel, or a custom brand palette. Those are practical needs in a design tool, theme editor, or settings panel where users need to choose and refine colors in different ways. For a form that only asks for one color, the extra modes may add complexity without helping users.

Khan presents Chroma Panel as his preferred answer to those needs. His article is an advocacy-style account, and the package documentation is maintained by its creators; neither is an independent usability or performance test. Treat the switch as a product-fit decision and verify the workflows that matter in your own application.
What Chroma Panel offers
The maintainer README describes a compact color input and a full inline panel, with five selection modes and additional color-management features. These are maintainer-documented capabilities, not independently verified results.

Install it and check the current API
The DEV article and maintainer documentation give this installation command:
npm install chroma-panelExamples differ between the article and current README: Khan shows a ChromaPanel component with a hex value in React state and updates it using newColor.hex, while the README also presents a ColorInput example alongside a separate inline ChromaPanel example. Component names and API shape can vary by version. Check the current package documentation for the release you install before copying an example into production.

Those are maintainer statements; inspect the package version and its peer-dependency requirements as part of adoption, especially if your app uses an older React release or a nonstandard setup.
Check compatibility and bundle impact
The maintainer’s compatibility table lists React 16.14 and later, including React 19, and Chrome 123, Firefox 120, and Safari 17.5. The README ties its browser baseline to stylesheet use of light-dark(). Confirm the release-specific support table and test the browsers your application promises to support before shipping.
The repository reports these bundle figures for its own measurement: the increase in a Vite production build with React external was 23.1 kB gzipped for all five modes, or 15.0 kB for the panel shell plus one mode. These are maintainer-reported figures, with no year stated in the retrieved README; they are not an independent benchmark. Your result can differ with package version, bundler, build configuration, and how modes are imported, so measure the contribution in your own production build.

How to decide whether to migrate
Chroma Panel is worth evaluating when the richer interaction is part of the product requirement. Before replacing an existing picker, compare candidates against the same application needs rather than relying on feature claims or labels.
- Selection modes: list the modes users need—such as a simple field, wheel, sliders, swatches, image sampling, eyedropper, or gradients—and confirm each is available in the version under consideration.
- React integration: check controlled and uncontrolled state patterns, form behavior, TypeScript support, React version, server-side rendering or client-component needs, and fit with existing conventions.
- Accessibility: test keyboard operation, semantic inputs, screen-reader output, and color contrast in the target app. A documented accessibility feature is not a substitute for testing the actual workflow.
- Runtime and support: verify browser requirements, peer dependencies, the installed package’s release notes, maintenance activity, and license terms.
- Cost of change: account for migration work, styling, tests, and the bundle impact measured with your own build configuration.
Search results identify react-colorful and react-color as alternatives, but the available material does not establish a fair, current feature-by-feature ranking. Compare their current documentation and releases against the same checklist rather than assuming one is universally better.

The repository states that Chroma Panel is MIT-licensed and names Sohail Khan as copyright holder. Check the license file and terms for the exact package release you plan to ship; repository-level statements can change and should not replace release-specific review.

A useful evaluation is to install the intended version in a representative branch, implement the modes your interface actually needs, and exercise them with your supported browsers and assistive technology. Check the resulting form values and state updates, then measure the production bundle under your own build settings. This can show whether the additional controls solve a user problem at an acceptable integration and runtime cost.
For Khan, the appeal is a broader color-selection toolkit in one React package. For another application, the right answer depends on whether users need those modes and whether the current package meets that application’s compatibility, accessibility, and maintenance requirements.
