Setting a project to 9:16 gives you a portrait canvas; it does not automatically make every clip fit well. For each shot, choose whether to fill the canvas by cropping the edges or preserve the whole frame with background padding, then inspect and reposition it before exporting.
Start with the delivery shape
For a full-screen vertical reel, begin with a 9:16 project or canvas preset. Kapwing lists 9:16 among its vertical formats, and Microsoft Clipchamp lists Portrait 9:16 for Reels, Stories, and Shorts. Clipchamp projects otherwise default to 16:9, according to Microsoft Support.
Choose the shape before assembling the edit when possible. A portrait canvas sets the output frame, but source clips can still have different proportions, so the framing decision has to happen clip by clip.
Inspect each clip and choose how it should fit
Add your footage, then review every clip in the portrait canvas. Mixed aspect ratios can leave empty borders or force a crop that cuts off useful content. Microsoft specifically advises checking each clip after changing a project’s ratio.

Kapwing documents both fill-and-crop and fit-to-center treatments, with background options. Its controls are examples of how browser editors may handle the choice; feature descriptions are not independent quality tests.
Reposition crops to protect the subject
Automatic centering can place a face, sign, product, or other important detail too close to an edge—or outside the visible crop. Adjust the crop position for each shot rather than assuming one setting suits the whole timeline. Clipchamp says to reposition a clip when its automatic fill crop looks wrong. Kapwing also describes safe zones for faces, subtitles, logos, and calls to action.

- Check that faces and other key subjects remain in frame throughout the shot, not just at its opening.
- Keep essential visual information away from the crop boundaries.
- Review subtitles, logos, and calls to action against the usable portrait area.
- Choose fit-to-center instead if preserving the complete source frame is more important than eliminating padding.
Choose a browser editor by the controls you need
Compare the workflow features that affect your footage: whether the ratio is set for the project or each clip, whether fill and fit are distinct choices, how much repositioning is available, whether the timeline supports multi-clip assembly and trimming, and what export or download controls are documented.

Export, then review the rendered video
Use the editor’s export or download control after the clip-by-clip framing review. The cited product pages document those controls, but they do not independently verify that every editor setting will be accepted by every social platform. Open the rendered file and check its portrait framing, borders, subject visibility, and any text or graphics before publishing.
