A 200 OK means the request succeeded according to HTTP semantics; it does not prove that the response contains data for the input you intended. For a GET, HTTP says the content represents the target resource. If a handler, request mapping, or cache selects the wrong target, the status can still be 200. Debug the response contract and the connection between the request and returned data separately.
What does 200 OK actually confirm?
RFC 9110 states, “The 200 (OK) status code indicates that the request has succeeded.” It also explains that the content’s meaning depends on the request method: for GET, it represents the target resource; for POST, it reports the status or results of the action; and for PUT and DELETE, it reports the status of the action. See RFC 9110, Section 15.3.1.

That is not a guarantee that the client selected the resource it meant to request, or that application-specific fields match the caller’s intended input. A successful HTTP exchange and a semantically correct application response are separate checks. The title alone does not identify a particular API or prove a specific cause.
How to diagnose a 200 response with the wrong data
-
Capture the complete exchange
Record the HTTP method, full target URI, relevant query parameters and headers, plus the response status, headers, and body. Compare them with the endpoint’s documented contract. This helps establish what was actually sent and returned—not just what the client intended to send.

- 【Multiple Power Supply Options】The black button on the left can flexibly switch the power supply mode, and support the use of AAA battery or Type C 5V to stably supply power to the USB tester
-
Validate the response contract
Check that the body has the expected shape and field types, and check response headers where the contract specifies them. Schema validation can catch structural contract violations. For example, AWS Powertools for TypeScript documents route-level response body and header validation.
-
Assert that the response matches the request
Separately compare the returned resource identifier and any request-dependent fields with the input. A valid-looking object can still describe the wrong resource; checking its ID against the requested ID tests that relationship. This identity assertion is an application-level test, not something the HTTP status code can establish.

Trace the request across service boundaries
Follow a request or correlation ID through gateway, service, and downstream logs or telemetry to reconstruct the path and locate where the unexpected result entered the flow. Azure guidance describes using a shared correlation ID for end-to-end tracing (interservice communication guidance); Microsoft API guidance also illustrates propagating trace identifiers in request and response headers (API design guidance). A trace helps explain the path, but does not by itself prove the returned resource is correct.

Check whether the cache key distinguishes inputs
List every request dimension that can change the representation, then verify that the cache key includes those dimensions. If two requests differ in a relevant header, path, or query string but share a cache entry, one can receive a representation cached for the other. AWS documents request parameters—including headers, URL paths, and query strings—as possible API Gateway cache-key inputs in its API Gateway caching documentation.

Review retry handling separately
If retries are involved, check whether duplicate processing is prevented using an appropriately scoped idempotency key. A correlation ID links events for tracing; it is not a substitute for an idempotency key. Azure’s guidance describes services deriving and storing service-specific idempotency keys (interservice communication guidance).
What each check tells you
| Check | What it can establish | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Response-schema validation | The body shape, field types, and specified headers conform to the response contract. | That the response describes the resource or input the caller intended. |
| Request-to-response identity assertion | Returned identifiers or request-dependent fields match the relevant input. | That every part of the response conforms to the full contract. |
| Correlation or trace ID review | The request’s path through services and related log or telemetry events. | That the selected target or returned data is semantically correct. |
| Cache-key review | Whether requests that can yield different representations are distinguished in cache entries. | That routing, service logic, or other response generation is correct. |
| Idempotency review | Whether retries are handled to avoid repeated processing under the designed key behavior. | That the response corresponds to the intended input. |
Why did my API return 200 but the wrong data?
The status alone cannot identify the cause. Potential places to inspect include the target URI and request mapping, handler or downstream service behavior, and cache-key configuration. Start with the captured request and response, then use contract checks, identity assertions, and traces to narrow down where the mismatch appears. Without a concrete request/response sample, API contract, cache setup, or trace, no single cause can be established.
