With your local web app running and cloudflared installed, run cloudflared tunnel --url http://localhost:8000 to create a temporary public URL for it. Replace 8000 with the port your app actually uses. Cloudflare Quick Tunnels require no Cloudflare account or DNS records, and you do not need to configure router port forwarding. The command starts the tunnel; it does not start your app or install cloudflared.
Put your local app online with a Quick Tunnel
- Start your web app and note its local HTTP address and port—for example,
http://localhost:3000. - Install
cloudflaredfor your operating system using Cloudflare’s Tunnel setup guide. - In a terminal, run the command with your app’s port. For an app on port 3000, use
cloudflared tunnel --url http://localhost:3000. - Wait for the terminal to display a
trycloudflare.comURL, then open it to check that it reaches your app. Share that URL with the people who need to test the preview.
Cloudflare describes Quick Tunnels as temporary public URLs for local services. The local cloudflared client establishes an outbound tunnel to Cloudflare, so you do not need to open an inbound port on your router. If a restrictive firewall blocks outbound traffic, however, the tunnel may not connect; Cloudflare says to check outbound access to port 7844.
What the command does—and what it does not do
The command tells cloudflared to route public requests through a tunnel to the HTTP service at the specified local address. Your app must already be running and listening on that port. If the app uses HTTPS locally or a different hostname, use the address and scheme that match its local setup rather than copying the example unchanged.
A public URL makes the local service reachable from the internet. Treat it as an exposure, not as a private invitation: anyone who obtains the URL may be able to reach the app unless the app itself has access controls. Avoid exposing sensitive data or unauthenticated admin and development tools, and stop the tunnel when the test is finished.

Quick Tunnel limits and when to choose a different setup
Cloudflare documents Quick Tunnels as a testing option, not a production hosting setup. Its documentation lists a limit of 200 concurrent requests and says Quick Tunnels do not support Server-Sent Events (SSE). The 200-request figure is a documented product limit, not an independent performance benchmark. Cloudflare’s guidance for production use is to create a regular tunnel.
If your goal is a stable hostname rather than a temporary test link, use Cloudflare’s separate published-application workflow. Cloudflare’s getting-started guide lists a Cloudflare account and a domain on Cloudflare among the prerequisites; you configure a route from the public hostname to your local service. Cloudflare Quick Tunnel or ngrok?
Both are ways to put a tunnel client on your machine in front of a local app so it can be reached through a provider’s service. Cloudflare’s Quick Tunnel documentation establishes a temporary trycloudflare.com URL, no account or DNS setup for that quick route, and the testing limits above. Ngrok describes using a local agent to share localhost, but the cited overview does not establish a directly comparable set of current account requirements, URL duration, protocol limits, or pricing. Choose based on the setup and controls you need rather than assuming the two services have identical terms. Ngrok’s overview is at Preview, test, and share apps on localhost instantly.
If the URL does not load
- Check the local app first: open its localhost address on the same machine and verify the port in the command matches the app.
- Check that the tunnel is still running: the terminal running
cloudflaredneeds to remain open while the temporary link is in use. - Check outbound firewall rules: restrictive networks may block the tunnel’s outbound connection; Cloudflare identifies port 7844 as the port to check.
- Check app behavior: a Quick Tunnel is not suitable for SSE, and Cloudflare documents a 200 concurrent request limit.
