A page layout program is software for arranging text, images, and other graphic elements into pages for publication. Also called page layout software or desktop publishing (DTP) software, it gives creators control over how a publication looks and how it is prepared for print or digital distribution.
What does a page layout program do?
Page layout software is used to compose publications such as books, magazines, marketing materials, and other print or digital documents. It lets you position text and graphics, adjust typography, and organize the page as a designed whole rather than focusing mainly on writing a continuous stream of text.
For long or consistent publications, layout tools can also manage text flowing across pages and reuse design elements. For example, Affinity describes master pages and shared text styles for reusing layouts, while Adobe explains that parent pages can carry repeated elements and placeholders across a document. Affinity’s page layout overview and Adobe’s guide to parent pages describe these approaches.
What is it used to create?
- Books and magazines: Arrange chapters, columns, images, captions, and recurring page elements.
- Marketing materials: Compose publications such as brochures and other designed documents.
- Digital publications: Prepare page-based content for digital distribution, depending on the software and output format it supports.
Capabilities differ between products. Adobe describes InDesign as serving print and digital publishing, including print, web, and tablet output. Affinity lists PDF, SVG, JPEG, PNG, TIFF, and EPUB among its export formats; that list should not be assumed to apply to every program. See Adobe’s InDesign product page and Affinity’s product overview for those vendors’ descriptions.

How is page layout software different from a word processor?
The practical difference is the main task each tool emphasizes. A word processor is commonly centered on writing and flowing text; a page layout program is centered on composing pages by positioning text and visual elements and controlling their appearance. This is a useful distinction, not a hard boundary: word processors can make designed documents, and some projects can be completed in either type of software.
Examples of page layout programs
| Program | What its source describes | Useful context |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe InDesign | Adobe calls it a professional page layout application for print and digital publishing, with design, preflight, and publishing workflows. | Consider it when those publishing workflows match the project; the description alone does not make it the best choice for every user. |
| Affinity page layout software | Affinity highlights page composition, typography controls, master pages, reusable text styles, long-text flow, and multiple export formats. | Review its listed features and formats against the specific document and delivery requirements. |
| Scribus | The Scribus project describes Scribus as an open-source page layout program. | Its category is established by the project description; check project information for details relevant to your platform and workflow. |
| Microsoft Publisher | Microsoft describes Publisher as a desktop publishing application for creating publications. | Microsoft’s support page explains creating a publication; confirm current availability and licensing before choosing it. |

How to choose one
Start with the finished publication rather than the product name. Compare the options against these requirements:
- Output: Identify whether the project is for print, digital distribution, or both, then check that the program supports the required export and publishing workflow.
- Platform: Confirm the software is available for the operating system you use.
- Layout complexity: Check for the typography controls, long-text flow, reusable pages, and styles needed for the document.
- Production needs: If the work needs preflight or a particular export format, verify that capability for the specific product.
- Ease of use and licensing: Weigh the learning curve and current cost or licensing terms. These vary and should be checked with the vendor before deciding.
The examples above are not interchangeable recommendations, and the cited descriptions do not establish a current price comparison or a ranked best program.
