Does WordPress 7.1 Optimize Your Images? What It Does—and Doesn’t

WordPress 7.1 adds browser-side image processing for uploads, with a server-side fallback. Here’s what it optimizes, what it doesn’t, and when a plugin may help.

Yes, WordPress 7.1 processes images during uploads, but “not really” is fair if you mean a guaranteed, one-click optimization of every image on your site. In supported browsers, WordPress can compress, resize, convert and generate image sizes in the browser before uploading them. Unsupported browsers fall back to server-side processing, and the documented feature is an upload workflow—not a bulk optimizer for your existing Media Library.

What WordPress 7.1 does to uploaded images

WordPress 7.1 adds client-side media processing: in compatible browsers, image work happens on the visitor’s device using WebAssembly and libvips, rather than being handled entirely on the server. The Core developer note describes compression, resizing, cropping, format conversion, EXIF rotation, progressive or interlaced encoding, and generation of registered image sub-sizes before upload. WordPress’s 7.1 release page also highlights AVIF, HEIC and HDR gain-map support.

That is meaningful built-in processing for new uploads. It does not mean WordPress promises the smallest possible file for every image, or that it replaces every image-optimization workflow. The Core developer note describes output formats including JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and GIF; which processing path and output apply depends on browser support and the image.

Does it make images smaller?

WordPress says the new approach reduces server CPU and memory use and can produce smaller files for visitors. The Core developer note says libvips produces better-compressed output than GD or Imagick and reports that “JPEGs are reduced ~15% with MozJPEG like encoding.” That is an implementation comparison for generated JPEGs, not a promise that each uploaded image will shrink by 15%.

The materials do not establish a guaranteed improvement in page-load time for every site. Results depend on the images, formats and processing path involved; the documented comparison should not be treated as a measured whole-site speed gain.

Does every upload use browser processing?

No. The Core note says client-side processing is enabled by default in browsers with the required capabilities. When those features are unavailable, WordPress falls back to server-side processing. The note also describes a filterable feature gate that developers can use to configure client-side processing. So the upload route can vary by browser and site configuration.

HEIC and iPhone photos

HEIC decoding has additional platform requirements. The Core developer note identifies Chromium browsers on macOS, Windows devices with HEVC support, and Safari on macOS; it does not promise identical HEIC handling on every browser or device. If HEIC uploads matter to your workflow, confirm the behavior on the specific device and browser you use.

Does WordPress 7.1 optimize images already in the Media Library?

The official feature description is about processing during uploads. It does not establish that WordPress 7.1 scans and bulk-optimizes images that were already in the Media Library. If your goal is to process an existing collection, that is a separate task from the built-in upload pipeline.

Do you still need an image-optimization plugin?

Not necessarily for ordinary uploads in a supported browser: WordPress 7.1 already provides built-in processing. A separate tool may be relevant if you need bulk handling of older media or controls and workflows beyond the Core upload feature. For example, the WordPress.org listing for Elementor Image Optimizer documents bulk optimization functionality. Check current product documentation to confirm that a plugin supports your formats and workflow before relying on it.

Which WordPress version includes the feature?

WordPress 7.1 “Mary Lou” was released on August 19, 2026, according to the WordPress 7.1 documentation. The WordPress documentation lists WordPress 7.1.1 as released September 17, 2026. Those dates distinguish the feature’s major release from the later maintenance release; the cited version pages do not say that 7.1.1 changed image processing.
