You can automate everyday Android tasks without writing code: start with Google Home routines or, on a Galaxy phone, Samsung Modes and Routines. If you want more flexible visual workflows, try Automate for Android. Which triggers and actions you can use depends on your phone, apps, account, and connected devices.
Choose the automation tool that fits your phone
| Option | Works on your current phone | Triggers and actions | Setup complexity | Extra smart-home hardware | Testing and disabling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Home routines | Where Google Home routines are available on your device and account | Depending on routine type and setup, starters can include a voice command, time, sunrise or sunset, alarm dismissal, or device event; actions vary | Choose a routine in the Google Home app, then add a starter and actions | Only for actions that control smart-home devices | Test the routine in the app and pause or disable it there |
| Samsung Modes and Routines | Galaxy phones with the feature; exact menus vary by model and software | Runs preset actions when selected conditions occur | Uses built-in settings; menu location depends on the device | Not necessarily; depends on chosen actions | Test and turn off the mode or routine in its settings |
| Automate by LlamaLab | Android app, subject to app and device compatibility | Visual flows connect building blocks; the product page describes more than 400 blocks | More to learn than a built-in routine editor; predefined options are available for novices | Only if a flow controls connected smart-home devices | Run a flow carefully, check its status, and disable it in the app if needed |
Google Home is a natural starting point for voice-led routines and compatible smart-home actions. On Galaxy, Samsung’s built-in Modes and Routines can change supported phone behavior when conditions are met. Samsung says that on Android 13 and 14, Bixby Routines features are under Settings > Modes and Routines; other software versions and models may present different menus. Samsung’s Modes and Routines guide explains the feature.
For a visual editor with more building blocks, Automate for Android uses flowcharts and offers predefined options for beginners. It is still a separate app, with its own permissions and behavior. Its documentation explains how connected blocks work and notes that a flow can stop after an error; treat simulated screen taps and other UI interaction as a last resort.
How to create a Google Home routine
- Open the Google Home app and go to Routines.
- Select a routine to edit or create one, then choose Add starter. Pick an available trigger, such as a voice command or time, based on what the app offers.
- Choose Add action and select the actions you want. Personal information, media, and device controls may depend on your account, device, settings, and connected services.
- Save the routine, then trigger it once while you can check the result. Remove any action that does not appear in the app or does not behave as expected.
Google documents starters and actions as conditional on routine type, connected devices, settings, and other limitations. Its examples include the spoken phrase “Hey Google, good morning,” but the exact choices available to you may differ. See Google’s routine starter and action guidance and Google’s examples and routine limitations.

Five useful routines to build
1. Get a morning briefing
Set a voice starter such as “Hey Google, good morning,” or choose a time-based starter if offered. Add weather, calendar information, news, or media actions that are available in your routine editor. Google documents this kind of briefing, but whether personal information or a particular action works depends on your account and configuration. Try the routine while awake and verify each action before relying on it.
2. Set quiet time for sleep, work, or study
On a Galaxy phone, create a Mode or Routine with a time condition and select the supported phone actions you want, such as changing behavior for a focus period. Samsung describes Modes and Routines as condition-based automation, but available controls differ across models and One UI versions. Open Settings > Modes and Routines if that path is present, and check the options on your device rather than assuming another Galaxy has the same settings.

3. Start an evening wind-down
Schedule a routine for a chosen evening time and add available device or media actions—for example, starting audio or changing a supported setting. Keep this as a convenience: test it on an ordinary evening, and use your phone’s normal settings for anything essential. If the routine offers a pause or disable control, make sure you know where it is before scheduling it.
4. Turn on lighting when you arrive home
Use a supported location or other starter offered in your routine editor, then add an action to control a compatible light or smart plug. This requires the light or plug to be set up correctly in Google Home, and device support varies. Google documents routines that control compatible smart-home devices, including plugs; check that your particular device is listed and available before building the routine. See Google’s supported routine examples and limitations.

5. Run several actions with one phrase
Make one voice starter launch a short sequence: for example, ask for a briefing and then play media, or combine a compatible device action with weather or calendar information. Google’s documented examples combine lights, weather, calendar events, and news, but those choices are not guaranteed on every device or account. Start with two actions, save, and test each one before adding more.

Google Assistant Help warns: “Routines are for convenience only, not safety- or security-critical use cases. Do not create Routines that could result in injury or harm if they fail to start or stop.” Do not use routines for locks or unlocks, emergency functions, or other tasks where a missed or unintended action could cause harm. Google also notes that safety- and security-related starters are restricted and that not every device is available as a starter. Read Google’s routine limitations.
