You can build a small Python script that sends a profile photo to a reverse face search API and displays possible public-page matches for a person to review. A match is a lead, not proof that a profile is fake or that two images show the same person. The project repository behind this example documents a Trace API workflow; its implementation details should be checked against the provider’s current API reference before use.
What this checker can—and cannot—tell you
The repository describes a flow that uploads an image, polls for a scan result, and returns possible matches with similarity scores and public URLs. Those results can help you find places where an image may have appeared elsewhere online. They do not establish who controls the account, whether the profile is deceptive, or whether the image was used without permission.
Coverage is limited to images the service can find. Publicly indexed photos may be absent or incomplete, and look-alike faces or reused source images can make results ambiguous. The repository’s score tiers are provider guidance, not independent accuracy validation; the sources available here do not establish a false-match rate or other independent accuracy measure.
Example workflow: submit, poll, and review
The project repository documents a Python example using the requests package and a bearer API key. The outline below captures its sequence rather than claiming a tested, drop-in script. Check the repository’s current API reference for exact endpoint paths, request fields, response formats, and polling behavior before adapting it.

- Prepare the photo. Use an image you have a lawful reason to submit. Avoid sending unnecessary personal data along with it.
- Submit the image. Send the image to the provider’s scan endpoint using the required authentication. Keep the API key outside the source code—for example, in an environment variable—and never print or log it.
- Poll for completion. Use the scan identifier returned by the submission step to check for a result, following the provider’s documented polling interval and limits.
- Present possible matches. Show any returned similarity score and source URL as results to review. Do not label a profile “fake” automatically or treat a score as verified identity.
- Review the source pages yourself. Compare the context and image use, and avoid consequential action based only on a match.
For a user-facing tool, minimize image uploads and retention, keep credentials on the server rather than in a browser or mobile app, and avoid logging image contents or other unnecessary data. These are prudent implementation safeguards, not claims about the repository’s tested behavior.
How this differs from a face collection search
“Reverse face search” can mean different things. The Trace-backed repository example is described as searching for possible matches on public pages. AWS Rekognition’s SearchFacesByImage instead searches the largest detected face in an image against a collection you specify. It accepts image bytes or an S3 reference, and the image must be PNG or JPEG. A collection-based system also requires you to have faces indexed in that collection; it is not a search of the public web. Face search is not a liveness check
A reverse search looks for possible image matches; it does not determine whether a person is physically present or whether an image is being presented live. Liveness assessment addresses whether the submitted image appears to show a live person rather than a printed or displayed photo. OpenCV’s Face Recognition Python SDK documentation describes liveness checks as a separate capability. Even a liveness result would not verify that an online profile’s identity or claims are truthful.

The project repository says its service returns public URLs and similarity scores rather than names or personal records. It also prohibits using the service to identify, locate, monitor, stalk, or harass people, and says not to upload another person’s photo without a lawful reason. Those statements describe the project’s own guidance; they are not an independent audit of the service or its data handling.

- Check applicable local requirements before submitting or processing someone else’s face image.
- Limit uploads and retention, and make clear to users what is sent and how results should be interpreted.
- Require human review before taking action that could affect a person or their account.
