Bambu Lab’s R1 is a dedicated 55 W CO₂ laser cutter and engraver, not a 3D printer. The company’s September 22, 2026 announcement pitches it as an approachable addition to its ecosystem, citing automatic optical-path alignment and a workflow built around Bambu Suite. Those are manufacturer claims, not verified hands-on results: no independent testing is established here, so “surprisingly easy” should be read as Bambu Lab’s design promise rather than a tested verdict.
What the Bambu Lab R1 is
Bambu Lab announced the R1 on September 22, 2026, as its first product line beyond 3D printing. It is a 55 W CO₂ laser machine designed to cut and engrave materials, with a published work area of 600 × 300 mm. The company lists a maximum speed of up to 1,000 mm/s; both figures are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements.

The standard stated processing area and the optional long-stock arrangement are different: Bambu Lab says the Conveyor accessory can extend processing length to 3,000 mm. That figure describes length with the accessory, not a larger 600 × 300 mm work area.

Bambu Lab distinguishes materials it says the R1 can cut from those it says it can engrave. Its Chinese technical specifications add an important qualification: bare metal is not supported for engraving.

| Operation | Materials listed by Bambu Lab |
|---|---|
| Cutting | Wood, acrylic (including transparent acrylic), leather, paper, and fabric |
| Engraving | Glass, stone, and coated metals; bare metal is not supported for engraving |
These are the manufacturer’s stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every grade, thickness, coating, or finish will produce the same result. Bambu Lab explains that a CO₂ laser interacts with transparent acrylic and glass differently from a diode laser, which is why it lists those materials for the R1. The announcement does not establish specific material thickness limits or independently measured cut quality.
Why Bambu Lab says engraving should be easier
The company’s ease-of-use case rests on setup and workflow rather than on independently demonstrated output. Bambu Lab says the R1 automatically aligns its optical path, and that users work through Bambu Suite on Windows and macOS. It also says the R1 uses the same account and MakerWorld ecosystem as its 3D printers.

Important enclosure and laser-safety change
Bambu Lab says installing either the Riser Base or Conveyor means the enclosure is no longer complete and changes the R1 from a fully enclosed Class 1 device to a Class 4 device. For that configuration, the company says CO₂ laser safety goggles are required and use is intended exclusively for trained personnel in professional settings.
This is the manufacturer’s safety guidance; independent regulatory confirmation is not established here. Read the current R1 instructions and safety documentation for the configuration you plan to use, and do not assume the base-machine enclosure classification applies after adding an accessory.

What to compare before choosing a laser
The R1’s announced features make several practical comparison points especially relevant. Evaluate competing machines using the same intended materials and jobs rather than comparing headline power or speed alone:
Quick Recap
- Material support: Check whether the machine is specified for transparent acrylic and glass, and whether metal engraving requires a coating.
- Usable dimensions: Compare the actual work area and any pass-through or conveyor length separately.
- Setup and software: Look at alignment or calibration steps, supported operating systems, and the software workflow you would use.
- Optics and accessories: Check which lens is included and which attachments are optional for curved objects or longer stock.
- Safety configuration: Compare the enclosure and exhaust requirements, and whether accessories alter the stated safety classification.
- Total regional cost: Include required accessories, taxes, shipping, and current local availability rather than relying on an announcement price.
