There is no proven all-around winner: the right walking app depends on your phone, destination, and whether you are navigating city streets or following a planned trail. For an iPhone city walk, start with Apple Maps; for a walk linked to transit or step-free routing, check Citymapper; for a saved outdoor route, consider komoot. Google Maps has added Gemini-assisted walking navigation, but that announcement does not establish better pedestrian route quality.
Which app should you choose?
| App | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Maps | City walks on iPhone, with spoken guidance or route choices that avoid hills, stairs, or busy roads. | Some features, including spoken and immersive instructions, are unavailable in certain countries or regions. Confirm availability where you are walking. |
| Citymapper | Urban walks, especially when connecting to public transport or seeking a step-free route. | Its route and accessibility details are company-described features, not an independent audit. Check coverage and the specific route in your city. |
| komoot | Following a planned or saved outdoor route with on-screen and optional voice instructions. | The region around the route start must be unlocked for navigation; automatic rerouting requires a stable internet connection. |
| Google Maps | Walking and cycling navigation with Gemini assistance, where the feature is available. | Google’s January 29, 2026 announcement says rollout is worldwide on iOS and Android wherever Gemini is available. That is not evidence of superior walking routes. |
What matters when picking a walking app?
Your kind of walk
Address-to-address city navigation and following a saved outdoor route are different tasks. Apple Maps and Citymapper describe city-walking features; komoot’s cited guidance concerns saved-route navigation, so it is not a like-for-like alternative for every city address search.
Route preferences and access
Apple Support says iPhone Maps can show detailed walking directions and elevation previews, with route choices to avoid hills, stairs, or busy roads. Citymapper describes walk-routing options including “Fast” and “Main Roads,” hill avoidance, pedestrian-zone routing, and step-free options. Treat these as options to inspect, not guarantees that every route or entrance is suitable.
Citymapper says its walking router uses OpenStreetMap plus its own data about road types, surfaces, pedestrian areas, accessibility, transit stations, and elevation. It also advertises accessible station entrances. These descriptions come from Citymapper; verify that the specific streets, crossings, and station access meet your needs.

Voice guidance and transit
Apple describes spoken walking directions on iPhone, though availability varies by region. Citymapper describes audio directions through headphones, automatic rerouting, and live progress sharing, which may be useful when a walk forms part of a public-transport journey. Check the app’s route preview and settings before setting off.
Phone, destination, and internet access
Apple’s cited walking features are for iPhone and should not be assumed to apply to Android. Citymapper’s own coverage and routing claims should be checked in the destination city. For komoot, unlock the region around the starting point; if you expect automatic rerouting, plan for the need for a stable internet connection.

What the current feature information does—and does not—show
Google announced Gemini-assisted walking and cycling navigation for Google Maps on January 29, 2026, with rollout on iOS and Android wherever Gemini is available. Availability therefore depends on Gemini support and rollout. The announcement describes a feature, not a head-to-head test of pedestrian directions.
Apple says Maps is available in over two hundred regions around the world, while noting that feature availability varies by location. Broad app availability does not mean every walking feature is offered in every region.
