It can transfer a value once or keep data linked so changes in one application reach another. DDE has legitimate uses in software integration, but its command-execution feature has also been abused in malicious Office documents.
How a DDE conversation works
One application starts a conversation as the client; another responds as the server. Those roles are per conversation, so an application can be a client in one exchange and a server in another. DDE messages coordinate the exchange, while shared memory carries larger data.
A conversation identifies the information through three parts:
- Service or application: identifies the server application.
- Topic: groups related information, often around a document.
- Item: identifies the particular value or data being exchanged.
This structure lets a client specify not merely which application it wants to contact, but also which topic and item within that application it needs.

What DDE can do
DDE supports several kinds of interaction: requesting a value, sending data to a server, receiving a response, sending a command for execution, and creating an update link. Microsoft describes messages such as WM_DDE_INITIATE, WM_DDE_REQUEST, WM_DDE_DATA, WM_DDE_ADVISE, WM_DDE_EXECUTE, and WM_DDE_TERMINATE as part of the protocol. See Microsoft’s overview of Dynamic Data Exchange.
One-time requests and ongoing links
A client can ask for a value once, or establish a link that remains active until the link or conversation ends. In a warm link, the server notifies the client when data changes, and the client then requests the updated value. In a hot link, the server sends the changed value directly.

Examples of legitimate use
Microsoft gives examples including receiving live information such as stock quotes or scientific-instrument data, keeping a chart embedded in a word-processing document synchronized with its source, and letting a spreadsheet query a database. These illustrate DDE’s role as an application-to-application integration mechanism; they do not mean every modern application uses it.
DDE messages and DDEML
DDE’s lower-level message parameters refer indirectly to atoms and shared-memory handles. Applications that implement the protocol directly must follow its rules for ownership and cleanup. Microsoft provides the Dynamic Data Exchange Management Library (DDEML) to manage conversations and shared strings and data at a higher level.

| Approach | What the application handles | Microsoft guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Direct DDE messages | The application handles the protocol messages and the associated atom and shared-memory ownership and cleanup rules. | Compatible with DDEML, but Microsoft recommends that new applications use DDEML. |
| DDEML | The library manages DDE conversations and shared strings and data through a higher-level API. | Recommended by Microsoft for new applications; compatible with message-based DDE. |
Microsoft explains the library’s role and recommendation in its DDEML documentation. This comparison is about implementation responsibilities; it does not establish that DDE is faster, safer, or preferable to other interprocess communication methods.
Is DDE dangerous in Office documents?
DDE itself is a communication protocol, not inherently malicious. However, its command-execution mechanism has been used in malicious Office documents. CISA describes DDE commands in documents delivered through phishing campaigns or hosted web content, where they could trigger execution without relying on VBA macros. CISA’s DDE technique entry documents that abuse path.

The security concern is therefore contextual: an unexpected document that attempts to run a DDE command deserves caution, but the existence of DDE does not make every DDE link or application malicious. Treat unsolicited attachments and prompts to enable or run document content carefully, and follow your organization’s security guidance.

DDE is a Windows mechanism for coordinating data exchange between applications, with options for one-time requests and continuing update links. It is useful to recognize the term when encountering legacy integrations, Windows programming documentation, or Office-document security discussions. The sources cited here do not establish how DDE compares with newer IPC mechanisms, so they do not support a blanket recommendation to choose it over a particular alternative.
