Meta’s January 2025 announcement described Meta AI remembering certain details from one-to-one chats and using signals such as Facebook profile location and recent Reels views to personalize responses. The systems’ controls and documentation differ, but the available information does not establish that either assistant is more accurate, private, or useful overall.

| How is memory structured? | Saved memories are separate from chat history. Details referenced from past chats are not a complete record and can change over time. | The announcement says Meta AI can remember certain details shared in one-to-one chats, but does not explain the underlying storage structure. |
| What review or deletion controls are documented? | Controls may include a memory summary and management options. Deleting a chat alone may not remove a separately saved memory. | Meta said users could delete Meta AI memories at any time, but the announcement does not give a full review or deletion workflow. |

How ChatGPT memory works
Saved memories and past-chat references are different
Saved memories are details you ask ChatGPT to remember or that it saves as useful context. They are stored separately from chat history, so deleting the conversation where a detail appeared does not, by itself, delete the saved memory.
When Reference chat history is enabled, ChatGPT may use relevant information from past conversations in future responses. OpenAI says this is not a complete record; which details are useful can change. The saved-memory feature and reference to chat history therefore affect personalization in different ways.

Check what is remembered and remove it
Depending on your account, platform, and workspace, memory controls may appear under Settings with labels such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. The summary is a high-level view, not a complete inventory. OpenAI also says source details may appear with responses that use personal context, though those sources may not show every factor.
- Open ChatGPT settings and review the Memory controls available in your account.
- To remove a saved detail, delete it in the memory controls. Deleting only the chat where it was mentioned may leave the separate memory in place.
- To remove the information more completely, also delete relevant source material, such as the original chat, file, or connected-app content.
- If you turn off Reference chat history, OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. The original chats remain unless you delete them separately.
Turning off Memory is not the same as deleting conversations or saved memories. OpenAI says deletion and updates can take time to propagate, and logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging.

Temporary chats and model improvement
Temporary chats do not create or update memories. Before starting one, you can choose whether it uses existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins; that choice cannot be changed once the chat begins. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account’s personalization settings.
Memory controls are also distinct from model-improvement settings. OpenAI says chats and remembered information from personal ChatGPT accounts may be used to improve models when “Improve the model for everyone” is on. Content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used for training by default.

What Meta has said about Meta AI memory
Memory in one-to-one chats
In its January 27, 2025 announcement, Meta described a gradual Memory Boost rollout intended to let Meta AI remember certain details shared in one-to-one WhatsApp and Messenger conversations. Meta said the assistant could retain information people explicitly asked it to remember or pick up relevant details from context. The announcement excluded group chats from this described memory behavior.
Meta said that rollout was for Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp on iOS and Android in the United States and Canada. Those were rollout details reported in January 2025, not confirmation of current availability in a particular country or account.
Personalization from Facebook and Instagram signals
Meta separately described a more personal touch for Meta AI on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram. Its example combined location listed on a Facebook profile, recent views of music-related Reels, and remembered information about someone’s family to shape a weekend suggestion. These are company-described examples of possible personalization, not independently tested results.
What is—and is not—known about Meta’s controls
Meta’s announcement said: “Meta AI will only remember certain things you tell it in 1:1 conversations (not group chats), and you can delete its memories at any time.” It does not establish a detailed review or correction process, a retention period, or how deletion interacts with other account data. The current control path and availability should be checked in Meta’s own in-app settings and help information.
Quick Recap
Best Value
Which difference matters for your use?
- If you want to understand what can shape an answer: ChatGPT’s documentation names multiple possible context sources, subject to account availability. Meta’s announcement describes one-to-one chat details alongside profile and Reels signals.
- If you want to manage remembered details: ChatGPT’s documentation explains how saved memories, past-chat references, and original source material relate to deletion. Meta’s announcement confirms the ability to delete memories but does not spell out the current workflow.
- If you are comparing privacy or answer quality: These product descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison. They are not enough to conclude that one assistant remembers more, protects information better, or gives more useful answers.
