Five BOOX settings are worth tailoring to how and where you read: front-light intensity and color temperature, refresh mode, per-app refresh behavior, full-refresh frequency, and auto-sleep or inactivity shutdown. They affect comfort, display clarity, scrolling, ghosting, or how the device behaves when you set it down. Names and availability can differ by model and firmware, so treat the paths below as guidance rather than universal labels.
1. Adjust the front light for your room
BOOX provides separate controls for front-light intensity and color temperature in the Control Center; brightness adjustment is also available in Display Settings. Change intensity to suit the ambient light and your preference. If your model supports color temperature adjustment, try warmer or cooler light and choose what looks comfortable to you. Warm light is not available on every BOOX model, and this is a preference adjustment, not a medical recommendation. BOOX’s front-light guidance describes the controls.
2. Match refresh mode to what you are doing
Refresh modes trade display quality against speed. BOOX’s published comparison ranks HD highest for display quality, followed by Speed and Smooth; for refresh speed, Smooth is faster than Speed, which is faster than HD. These are BOOX’s descriptions, not independent measurements. Available modes and their behavior depend on the device, display, and app. BOOX’s refresh-mode guide gives these suggested uses:
| Mode | Display quality | Refresh speed | BOOX’s suggested use |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD | Highest of the three in BOOX’s comparison | Slowest of the three | General reading, books, and pictures |
| Speed | Below HD in BOOX’s comparison | Faster than HD, slower than Smooth | Web browsing |
| Smooth | Below Speed in BOOX’s comparison | Fastest of the three | Scrolling-heavy third-party apps or video on supported devices |
For mostly static pages, start with HD. If a browser feels sluggish, try Speed; for an app with frequent scrolling, try Smooth if your device offers it. Switch back when the sharper presentation matters more than rapid updates.

3. Tune refresh behavior for individual apps
A browser or other scrolling-heavy app may benefit from a different refresh setting than a book reader. BOOX documents per-app refresh-rate controls, allowing supported apps to be adjusted without changing system-wide behavior. Look under app management or app optimization settings for the app’s refresh controls; labels and menu locations vary between software generations and devices. BOOX’s refresh-mode guidance and its app-optimization guidance describe these options.
4. Choose when to trigger a full refresh
E Ink can retain faint traces of previous content, known as ghosting. BOOX provides a full-refresh frequency setting: increasing the number of screen updates between full refreshes can allow more ghosting to build up, while refreshing more often may keep the display cleaner. BOOX puts it plainly in its Display Settings guidance: “The more taps you need, the more ghosting it will accumulate before a full refresh.”

- Dark, gray, or wrongfully believed low resolution screen : All Eink products used Kaleido 3 color e-ink technology, which currently has inherent limitations and share the same darker or grayer screen than LCD/LED ones. This is a characteristic of all e-ink products, not a defect. If it doesn't meet your expectations, you may return the product under our return policy. However, please note this is not considered a product fault.
- Over 99% of mobile apps are optimized for LCD/OLED screens with: High refresh rate expectations; Color-rich interfaces; Animation-heavy designs; These design choices conflict with E Ink's natural strengths in static content display.Energy Efficiency Trade-off: E Ink relies on electrophoretic particles that physically move to form images, resulting in slower refresh rates, makes it inherently unsuitable for conventional app interfaces designed for always-powered displays. If the buyers are not satisfied, they can apply for return or exchange, but it cannot be regarded as a malfunction.
There is no universal interval in BOOX’s guidance. Choose a frequency based on how much ghosting you notice and how often you want the screen to refresh fully. If traces become distracting before the automatic refresh, invoke a manual full refresh through the Control Center or a navigation shortcut if you have configured one. BOOX’s display settings instructions cover the frequency control; available controls can vary by model and firmware.

Display Settings lets you configure auto-sleep and inactivity shutdown after a period without activity. Choose a timeout that fits your reading routine: a longer interval may suit sessions where you pause often, while a shorter one may fit a device you put down frequently. BOOX’s Display Settings guidance describes these options but does not establish an ideal duration or quantify battery savings. The exact labels and available choices may vary by device and firmware.
