If Windows 11 or an app reports that bcrypt.dll is missing, not found, or corrupted, start by identifying what triggers the message. For an error limited to one app, try that app’s Repair option; if several apps or Windows features are affected, use Microsoft’s system-file repair sequence: run DISM, then System File Checker (SFC), from an elevated Command Prompt. Neither route is a guaranteed bcrypt.dll-specific fix: the error text alone does not establish its cause.
Start by identifying what is affected
Write down the full error message, the application or Windows feature that displays it, and when it began. Note whether it followed an app installation, Windows update, or other system change. This is a practical way to choose a troubleshooting path, not a Microsoft-documented diagnostic procedure for bcrypt.dll.
- If only one app shows the message, begin with that app’s repair options.
- If multiple apps or Windows features fail, investigate Windows system-file integrity.
- If the problem started just after an update, consider the update-specific recovery option below.
A restart is a reasonable low-effort first check, but it is not established as a specific fix for this error. Do not download a standalone bcrypt.dll from a DLL download site: the reviewed Microsoft guidance does not establish that as a safe or effective repair.
Try Repair for an app-specific error
Windows 11 offers Repair and, for some apps, Reset controls. These are app-level options, not confirmed bcrypt.dll-specific remedies, and not every app supports them.

- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected app, open its menu, and select Advanced options if shown.
- Select Repair if available, then try launching the app again.
- If Repair does not help and the app offers it, consider Reset. Check the app’s own guidance first because reset effects can differ by app.

Repair Windows files with DISM, then SFC
For problems that affect Windows or more than one app, Microsoft’s documented starting point for missing or corrupted protected Windows files is DISM followed by SFC. Microsoft says, “You should run DISM prior to running the System File Checker.” DISM repairs the Windows image; SFC checks protected system files and can replace corrupted files with cached copies.
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the prompt if asked.
- Enter this command and press Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth - Wait for DISM to finish. By default, it obtains repair files through Windows Update.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow - Keep the Command Prompt open until the scan completes. Restart Windows after repairs finish, then check whether the original symptom remains.
Microsoft states that “The sfc /scannow command will scan all protected system files and replace corrupted files with a cached copy.” The process can take several minutes. Follow Microsoft’s System File Checker instructions for details.

Understand the SFC result
SFC can report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, could not perform the scan, or found corrupted files it could not repair. A clean result does not prove that the affected app or the bcrypt.dll message is fixed; check the original symptom after the restart.

If DISM cannot find repair files
DISM normally uses Windows Update as its repair source. If Windows Update cannot supply the files, use a valid Windows installation or matching repair source and follow Microsoft’s instructions for repairing a Windows image. Do not substitute a DLL downloaded from an unverified site.

If the error began after a Windows update
When timing points to a recent Windows update, uninstalling that update is a possible recovery step. The updates available to remove vary. Use this option only when the timing supports it, and be aware that removing an update undoes its changes.

Reinstall the current Windows version with Windows Update
On supported Windows 11 configurations, the Fix problems using Windows Update recovery feature reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. Microsoft says, “This process reinstalls the same version of Windows already on your PC.” The option may not appear on every device or configuration.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Look for Fix problems using Windows Update, then select Reinstall now if the option is available.
- Keep the PC powered and connected to the internet while the process runs.

| Option | What it does | What it may preserve | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| DISM, then SFC | Repairs the Windows image and checks protected system files | Leaves the installed Windows state in place | General system-file repair; no bcrypt.dll-specific guarantee |
| App Repair or Reset | Repairs or resets one installed app | Effects depend on the app and option | Not offered for every app |
| Windows Update repair reinstall | Reinstalls the current Windows version and repairs components | Apps, files, and settings | Availability varies by Windows 11 version or configuration |
| Reset this PC: Keep my files | Reinstalls Windows | Personal files | Removes apps and settings |
| Reset this PC: Remove everything | Reinstalls Windows | Nothing among personal files, apps, or settings | Removes personal files, apps, and settings |
| Cloud download reset | Downloads a fresh Windows copy for Reset this PC | Depends on the selected reset option | Back up first; reset is more disruptive |
| Installation media | Reinstalls or recovers Windows | An in-place installation can retain files, settings, and installed apps when the correct option is selected | A clean installation can remove data |
Microsoft explains Reset this PC options, including the difference between cloud download and local reinstall. Review the choices carefully before confirming a reset.
Use Windows installation media carefully
Microsoft documents both in-place installation and clean installation using Windows installation media. An in-place installation can retain personal files, settings, and installed apps if you select the appropriate setup option. A clean installation can remove data, so read the setup choices closely and confirm you have a backup before continuing.
See Microsoft’s guidance on creating Windows installation media and Windows recovery options.
What to conclude if the message remains
Microsoft’s reviewed guidance does not identify a specific Windows 11 cause for bcrypt.dll missing, not found, or corrupted messages, and it does not guarantee a file-specific fix. If the app-level and Windows repair options do not resolve the problem, use the recovery route that matches the scope of the fault and the amount of disruption you can accept; consult the affected app’s support if the error is isolated to that app.
