But it can use details saved as memories and information drawn from your chat history to personalize later replies—and those are not the same thing as keeping old conversations, retaining data for service operations, or using chats to improve a model. The convenience is real; so is the effort it can take to see what carries forward and remove it from every relevant place.
Does ChatGPT remember everything you tell it?
No. OpenAI describes ChatGPT memory as a combination of distinct kinds of context, not a perfect, permanent record of every conversation. Its Memory help article distinguishes saved memories from information the service references from chat history. A saved memory is a detail stored separately; chat-history reference can draw on past conversations without treating every line as a saved fact.
OpenAI says saved memories may be added when a user asks ChatGPT to remember something or saved automatically when memory is available. Its June 2026 explainer describes a background process called “dreaming” that curates memories by referencing chat history. That means personalization is not limited to details a person deliberately labels “remember this,” but it does not establish that every sentence becomes a permanent memory.
The word “remember” can obscure several different operations:

These distinctions matter because each can have different controls. OpenAI’s documentation is evidence about ChatGPT’s stated features and policies, not a description of every AI assistant.
Why can deleting a chat leave something behind?
A saved memory and the chat where it originated are stored separately. The OpenAI Help Center’s “Memory in ChatGPT” article states: “Deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat.” The reverse is also true: deleting a saved memory does not erase the original conversation.

So if you shared a detail in a chat and ChatGPT saved it as a memory, deleting only that conversation may leave the saved detail available for personalization. Removing the memory alone may leave the source chat in your history. OpenAI also advises checking relevant Library files and connected apps if the same information appears there.
How to stop ChatGPT using old chats for personalization
OpenAI’s published controls, as described in its Memory help article checked October 4, 2026, separate changing future use from removing existing material. The names and locations of settings can change, so verify them in your current ChatGPT interface.

- Review saved memories. Open ChatGPT’s Memory settings and inspect the details listed there. Delete any saved memory you no longer want used.
- Delete the source conversation if needed. Find the chat where you first shared the detail and delete it separately; deleting a memory does not delete that conversation.
- Check other places the detail may appear. Review relevant files in Library and connected apps, if you used them to provide the information.
- Turn off reference to chat history if you do not want past chats used for personalization. OpenAI says this schedules deletion of information remembered from past chats within 30 days. The original conversations remain in history unless you delete them separately.
- Check model-improvement controls separately. Turning memory off is not the same as opting out of model improvement. On personal ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI says chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when “Improve the model for everyone” is on. OpenAI says the setting can be turned off in Data Controls.
- Use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation to use or update memory. OpenAI documents Temporary Chat as a way to have a conversation that does not use or update memory. That does not mean every limited safety or security use of context is governed by memory settings.
OpenAI says deletion may take time to propagate and that logs of deleted saved memories may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. The 30-day schedule for removing information remembered from past chats is not a promise that every copy of every item is erased within 30 days.
Does turning memory off delete old chats or stop model training?
No. These are separate controls. Turning off memory does not delete old chats, and turning it back on may allow ChatGPT to draw on conversations still in history. Separately, for personal ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI says chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when “Improve the model for everyone” is on. OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to train its models by default.

That is OpenAI’s stated policy for the account types named above; it should not be assumed to describe another provider or a different account arrangement. OpenAI’s privacy explainer, published May 6, 2026, advises: “Users should not share sensitive information in ChatGPT that they wouldn’t want to be used or reviewed.” That is the company’s guidance, not an independent finding.

No single rule can be inferred across providers. Anthropic’s consumer privacy article, dated July 1, 2026, says that if users allow their chats or coding sessions to improve Claude, data may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years in model-training pipelines. This is a possible retention period for the specified consumer setting—not a general Claude chat-retention period, nor an industry-wide figure.

Anthropic says opting out prevents previous or new chats from being used for future model training, while data may remain in training runs already underway or models already trained. Those terms describe Anthropic’s stated consumer policy and should not be treated as equivalent to OpenAI’s separate account and setting rules. A complete feature-by-feature comparison across AI assistants is not established by these policies alone.
What is the actual privacy concern?
The concern is less that an assistant has flawless total recall than that a user may not know which details persist, where they persist, or which setting governs each use. A preference remembered for convenience can become stale; OpenAI itself notes that remembered details may age into information that is incorrect or no longer relevant. A detail can also appear in more than one place, which is why deleting a chat or switching off one feature may not remove it from every source.
A September 13, 2026 arXiv preprint, “Vulnerabilities in Personalization: Assessing Health Privacy Risks in ChatGPT Logs and Memory,” examines the issue of health details in logs and memory. It is a preprint, and its existence is not by itself proof of a particular rate or severity of harm. Vendor help pages establish what providers say their features and controls do; they do not independently establish how well users understand those controls or how often privacy harms occur.
