The troubleshooter can diagnose problems and suggest fixes, but it is not a guaranteed one-click repair.
Start with the Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 11, Microsoft recommends running the automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. You can also open it through Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Follow the prompts, restart if directed, and check for updates again. Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting steps describe this as a way to help resolve update errors, not a guarantee.
On Windows 10, the documented Settings route is Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Windows Update > Run. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check Microsoft’s Windows 10 support information for current lifecycle guidance.
Record what failed before trying another fix
Note the complete error code, the update name, your Windows version, and the point where installation stops. Microsoft’s examples include “Windows Update not working,” updates stuck at 0% or 100%, and installations that reach 51–99% but do not complete. These symptoms and codes help narrow down next steps; they do not prove a single cause.

Try the low-risk checks first
- Confirm that your internet connection is working, then try checking for updates again.
- Restart the PC if you have not already, especially if Windows prompts you to do so.
- Check available storage. Microsoft’s troubleshooting page lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit OS upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit OS upgrade. The page does not state when those figures were published or establish them as requirements for every current Windows build, so check the specifications for your particular release. Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed when a device has a small hard drive.
- Run the troubleshooter above and follow its findings and suggestions.
Match the fix to the error or symptom
| What you see | Microsoft-listed association or next step |
|---|---|
| 0x8007000d | Microsoft associates this code with update files or cache problems; consult its error-specific instructions rather than assuming the cache is the only possible cause. |
| 0x800f0922 | Microsoft lists low storage as a possible issue and also suggests checking whether a VPN is in use. |
| 0x70422 | Microsoft associates this code with a disabled or stopped service. |
| 0xC1900101 | Microsoft associates this code with an incompatible driver. |
| Update stuck at 0%, 100%, or 51–99% | Use Microsoft’s symptom-specific guidance; the percentage alone does not identify the cause. |
For each case, use the matching directions in Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guide. Its error-code associations are troubleshooting clues, not definitive diagnoses for every Windows edition or build.
If the update cache may be involved
Microsoft lists clearing the contents of C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution as a general remedy. Its instructions involve stopping the Windows Update service before clearing the folder contents, then starting the service again. Follow Microsoft’s directions for your Windows version rather than deleting files while the service is running; changing service state and clearing cache contents are more involved than restarting or checking connectivity.
If system files may be damaged
For relevant system-file problems, Microsoft documents running DISM and System File Checker from an administrator Command Prompt. Open Command Prompt as administrator, run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth, wait for it to finish, then run sfc /scannow and wait for verification to reach 100%. See Microsoft’s system-file repair instructions. DISM may use Windows Update as a source for required files, so a failing update service can affect that repair path; it is not guaranteed to work offline.
Uninstall a recent update only if the timing fits
If the problem began immediately after a particular update, uninstalling that update may help. This is a separate recovery choice from reinstalling Windows, going back after a version upgrade, or using System Restore. Choose the option that matches what changed and review its effects in Microsoft’s recovery-options guidance. Back up personal files before broad or potentially destructive repair steps, as Microsoft advises in its update guidance.
