1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with the PS5’s automatic output settings, then enable HDR, VRR, 120 Hz output and ALLM only when your game, console connection and display support them. These options can improve the picture or reduce display-side processing, but none guarantees a particular game will render at its highest resolution or frame rate.
Best PS5 display settings to start with
Use Settings > Screen and Video on the PS5. For most TVs and monitors, leave the console on its automatic choices; they are designed to match the connected display rather than force a signal it may not handle.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | What it does and when to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | Automatic | The PS5 detects the TV’s capabilities and selects the best available resolution. Choose another supported output, such as 1440p, only deliberately or while troubleshooting. A 4K signal requires a compatible screen and output configuration. PlayStation’s 4K guide describes 4K as nearly four times the definition of 1080p HD. |
| HDR | On When Supported | HDR-capable games and apps can use HDR, while unsupported content stays in SDR. Always On converts non-HDR content to HDR output, which may not suit every display or viewer. Use Adjust HDR to calibrate for your screen; there is no universally correct calibration. Sony’s PS5 screen and video settings guide explains these options. |
| VRR | Automatic | On supported TVs and in supported games, Variable Refresh Rate adjusts the display refresh rate in real time. Apply to Unsupported Games is optional; turn it off if it causes unexpected behavior. Sony notes that VRR can cause slight brightness fluctuations on some BRAVIA TVs, depending on content frequency. Sony BRAVIA’s VRR guidance covers that behavior. |
| 120 Hz Output | Automatic | Allows compatible games and displays to use 120 Hz output. It does not make every game run at 120 frames per second. If enabling it causes video-output problems with a monitor or another display, turn it off. |
| ALLM | Automatic | Auto Low Latency Mode lets a compatible TV switch to its low-latency mode while gaming. Current PS5 system software is required, and the console does not send an ALLM signal while a media app is running. VRR output may trigger low-latency mode even if ALLM is Off; to disable ALLM behavior completely, Sony says to disable VRR too. |
| Video Transfer Rate | Automatic | Keep Automatic unless you are troubleshooting flicker. Sony suggests testing -1 or -2 if flicker occurs. These settings limit some combinations of 4K, 120 Hz and color formats, so they are not general picture enhancements. |
| Deep Color Output and RGB Range | Leave at default/Automatic | Change RGB Range only if the connected HDMI device is reporting it incorrectly. Adjust Display Area only if the picture is cropped or surrounded by a border. |
Resolution is only one part of the result: the display, connection and game all affect the image you see. Likewise, enabling a high-refresh output option does not change a game’s own rendering mode or frame-rate limit.
Do these settings add input lag?
VRR, 120 Hz output and ALLM are compatibility features, not universal “make every game faster” switches. ALLM asks a compatible TV to use its low-latency mode; that changes display behavior, not the game’s frame rate. VRR coordinates refresh timing when supported. The cited Sony documentation does not provide a measured input-lag reduction, so a specific millisecond improvement cannot be promised.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a low-latency setup, use Automatic for ALLM and VRR when your TV and connection support them, and use the TV’s game or low-latency mode if needed. If a particular display behaves unexpectedly, test one option at a time rather than changing several output settings together.
How to get 4K at 120 Hz on PS5
If 4K/120 Hz is missing, check the complete signal path: console, cable, TV input, TV settings and any receiver or intermediary device. A port’s HDMI version label alone does not establish support for every combination of features.

- Confirm the TV supports the 4K/120 Hz signal and that its firmware is current.
- Connect the PS5 to an HDMI port that supports the required format. Some TVs require enabling a model-specific HDMI signal format in their settings; port locations and supported formats vary by model and region.
- For VRR, enable the TV’s VRR HDMI format if its manual requires it. Sony’s BRAVIA instructions apply to listed BRAVIA 9, BRAVIA 8, BRAVIA 8 II, BRAVIA 7, BRAVIA 5 and A95L models; settings may differ on other displays. See Sony’s BRAVIA HDMI and VRR guide.
- Check whether an AV receiver, soundbar or other device between the console and TV limits the signal. Test a direct connection to a supported TV port if practical.
- On the PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output, including Resolution and Video Transfer Rate.
- Use the HDMI cable included with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, as Sony recommends for 4K/120 Hz. If the included cable works, there is no need to replace it just because you are adjusting picture settings.
Why HDR may look washed out
HDR appearance depends on the display and its calibration, so a washed-out image does not mean one PS5 setting is wrong in every setup. Select HDR On When Supported, then run Settings > Screen and Video > Adjust HDR and follow the on-screen calibration prompts for the connected display. If the result remains poor, check the TV’s HDR mode and the specific HDMI input settings in its manual. Avoid using Always On as a universal fix: it converts SDR content to HDR output.
When to change the defaults
- Flicker: Test Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2. If the flicker stops, remember that the reduced rate can limit some 4K/120 Hz/color-format combinations.
- Video output fails after enabling 120 Hz: Turn 120 Hz Output off and check display compatibility, firmware and HDMI port settings.
- Unexpected behavior with VRR: Disable Apply to Unsupported Games first. VRR can also cause slight brightness fluctuations on some content and displays.
- Cropped image or borders: Adjust Display Area rather than changing RGB Range.
- Incorrectly reported HDMI color range: Change RGB Range only if the connected device reports it incorrectly.
Check model limits before selecting advanced output
Sony lists 8K output and Enhance PSSR Image Quality as available only on PS5 consoles in the CFI-7000 model group. 8K output requires a display supporting 8K at 60 Hz with Display Stream Compression, disables VRR, and has other feature limitations. Check your console model and display documentation before expecting these options to appear or work together.
