Credential stuffing is an automated attack that tries usernames and passwords exposed in one breach on other websites. It can work when you reuse a password. Protect your accounts with a unique password for each service, stored in a password manager, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA)—preferably a passkey or phishing-resistant FIDO/WebAuthn method when available.
What is credential stuffing?
In a credential-stuffing attack, someone uses username-and-password pairs obtained from a breach or other disclosure and submits them automatically to sign-in pages on other services. The attacker is counting on people reusing passwords: if a password leaked from one site still works elsewhere, the other account may be taken over.
Credential stuffing is different from two related login attacks:
- Brute force: trying many possible passwords against one account.
- Password spraying: trying one or a small number of passwords across many accounts.
The tactics differ, though some of the defenses overlap. Once an attacker gets into an account, possible harms depend on what the account can do. In e-commerce, NIST describes risks such as fraudulent purchases, gift-card purchases or redemption, and misuse of loyalty programs. A compromised email account may also put other accounts at risk through password-recovery flows.

How can you protect your accounts?
1. Use a different password for every account
A unique password prevents a password exposed by one service from being replayed as the same secret on another. Use a password manager to generate and store distinct passwords for accounts that still use passwords; NIST highly recommends password managers for this purpose. NIST’s consumer password guidance also points users toward passkeys where available.
2. Turn on MFA, especially for important accounts
MFA asks for an additional authenticator beyond the password, so a stolen password alone may not be enough to sign in. Prioritize email and financial accounts, and enable it on social media, online stores, and other services that offer it. CISA’s practical advice is: “Any MFA is better than no MFA.” — Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, More than a Password.

3. Prefer passkeys or phishing-resistant MFA when supported
Choose a passkey or FIDO/WebAuthn method when the service supports it. CISA identifies FIDO/WebAuthn as phishing-resistant because it can prevent authentication from being used on a fake site. If those options are unavailable, another MFA method is generally a better barrier than password-only access, but methods do not provide equal protection; text-message codes have weaknesses. Check that you understand how to recover the account if you lose access to the device or authenticator.
4. Change passwords that may have been exposed
If you suspect a password has been exposed, change it on every account where you reused it. Give each account its own new password. OWASP recommends resetting passwords when compromise is suspected rather than forcing routine changes without evidence of compromise. OWASP’s 2025 authentication guidance covers this approach.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
5. Check activity and recovery details
Review recent account activity and look for unfamiliar sessions, sign-in alerts, recovery details you did not change, or actions you did not take. If you cannot sign in, use that provider’s official account-recovery process; the steps vary by service.
What should you do if a password may be compromised?
NIST’s consumer guidance says, “The first thing you should do is add multifactor authentication.” Pair that with unique passwords: MFA adds another sign-in barrier, while replacing a reused password prevents the same exposed secret from opening other accounts.

- Review sign-in activity, active sessions, and recovery details, and use the service’s official recovery process if you are locked out.
How can services defend against credential stuffing?
Preventing account takeover is also the service operator’s responsibility. OWASP recommends that services use MFA, check new or changed passwords against lists of breached passwords, and limit or progressively delay failed login attempts. Logging failures and alerting administrators to suspected automated attacks can help operators respond.
These controls need careful design. For example, a poorly designed lockout can let an attacker deny service to legitimate users by repeatedly triggering it. OWASP’s Credential Stuffing Prevention Cheat Sheet discusses defenses for operators.

What the available figures do—and do not—show
NIST’s consumer password page reports that the Identity Theft Resource Center recorded more than 3,000 data breaches in 2024, potentially exposing hundreds of millions of online accounts. That figure provides breach context; it is not a count of credential-stuffing attempts or successful account takeovers. The sources cited here do not establish a recent, directly comparable share of login traffic or account takeovers attributable to credential stuffing.
For further technical context, NIST NCCoE’s Multifactor Authentication for E-Commerce, SP 1800-17 Volume B describes the e-commerce risks of account takeover. NIST’s SP 800-63B provides digital identity and authentication guidance.
