Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteEvaluate each software connection as its own security decision: identify what it does, what data and permissions it needs, what evidence supports the vendor’s security claims, and who will monitor it after launch. There is no universal checklist or certification that proves an integration is safe for every startup; the review should match your systems, data, commitments, and capacity to operate the service.
Start with the startup’s use case and risk
Before comparing products, write down the business workflow the software must support, the systems it will connect to, the sensitivity of the information involved, relevant customer or regulatory commitments, and the level of risk your team can accept. This makes the review proportionate: a connection handling routine scheduling data may warrant different scrutiny from one that can access employee records or financial information.
NIST’s security and privacy control assessment guidance describes customizable assessment procedures and planning. Use that flexibility to focus on your actual exposure rather than copying an enterprise control list wholesale.
Map what each integration can do
For every proposed connection, record its purpose, the systems involved, and the direction of data flow. A connection may send information one way, synchronize it in both directions, or expose settings for another service to read. Do not assume the word “integration” tells you which of these applies.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
- Business purpose and owner: Name the workflow and the person accountable for it.
- Data and operations: Identify the types of information, records, and actions the connection can access.
- Connection and authentication: Ask how the systems connect and how the integration proves its identity.
- Permissions: Find out what access is required and whether it can be narrowed to the necessary records and operations.
- Credentials and lifecycle: Establish what credentials or tokens are held, how access is reviewed or revoked, and how the connection can be disabled.
- Visibility and failures: Ask what activity or settings the team can see, how errors are handled, and who investigates issues.
These are questions to put to the vendor, not assumptions that every product supports a particular control. NIST’s March 2026 API protection guidance frames API risk across lifecycle activities and discusses protections before runtime and during operation. Seattle Pacific University’s SaaS software checklist likewise prompts buyers to consider whether integration is needed and how data will be exchanged, including through an API or flat file.
Examine security evidence for the service you will use
Ask for relevant independent security assessment material and supporting documentation. Then check whether the evidence covers the specific service, product scope, assessment period, exceptions, and deployment you are considering. A report or certification that applies to a different service or omits the relevant environment may not answer your question.

- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
CMS’s Rapid Cloud Review criteria offer an example of requesting a recent, applicable independent report; they are part of CMS’s process, not a universal startup requirement. CMS cites SOC 2 and ISO 27001 as examples in its context. Treat such labels as evidence to inspect, not proof that your particular integration is safe. NIST’s assessment guidance can help structure follow-up questions about whether evidence addresses the risks you identified.
Compare vendors against the same questions
When two or more products are under consideration, apply consistent criteria. There is no universal scoring formula established by the guidance cited here; weigh the answers against your use case and your team’s ability to operate the service safely.

| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Integration coverage | Does it support the systems and workflows you need, and through what connection method? |
| Data exposure | What data moves, in which direction, and for what purpose? |
| Identity and permissions | How is the connection authenticated, and can its access be limited to what it needs? |
| API controls | What risks and protections are addressed before launch and during operation? |
| Visibility and response | Can your team see relevant settings or findings, and is there a named response owner? |
| Security evidence | Is independent evidence available, and does its scope apply to the exact service being evaluated? |
| Operating fit | Can your available staff and processes maintain the configuration and respond to issues? |
NIST describes API protection as an incremental, risk-based effort rather than one mandatory implementation. The Cloud Security Alliance’s SaaS Security Capability Framework is described as a baseline for vendor security assessment and SaaS security implementation; use it as a reference, not a substitute for assessing your own requirements.

Document who owns the business purpose, credentials, configuration changes, and response to findings. Decide when access will be reviewed and which changes should trigger an earlier check—for example, a material change in the connected system, permissions, or data use. These practices extend the lifecycle-based review into day-to-day ownership; they are not universal mandates.

CMS’s SaaS security posture management guidance calls for planning a rapid response to findings. Apply that idea at a scale your startup can sustain: make clear who receives an alert or report, who decides what to do, and how the team will disable or change a connection if needed.
