DLSS vs. Native Resolution: Image Quality, Performance, and Artifacts

DLSS can raise frame rates by reconstructing an output image from a lower-resolution render, but quality varies by game, mode, scene, and native anti-aliasing. Learn what to compare and which artifacts to watch for.

DLSS Super Resolution can look close to native rendering—and sometimes cleaner in a particular scene—but it is not a guaranteed visual match. It reconstructs the chosen output resolution from a lower-resolution internal render, which can improve frame rate. The tradeoff depends on the game, DLSS mode and model, output resolution, scene, and native anti-aliasing method. Compare both in motion as well as in still images.

Is DLSS better than native resolution?

There is no universal winner. Native resolution means the game renders at the output resolution, but the final image may still be processed with temporal anti-aliasing (TAA) or another anti-aliasing method. DLSS Super Resolution renders fewer pixels internally and uses temporal and spatial information to reconstruct an image at the chosen output resolution.

NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite of RTX Tensor Core-powered neural rendering technologies intended to raise frame rates while targeting image quality comparable to native rendering. That is NVIDIA’s stated goal, not a guarantee that every game or scene will match native detail. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview explains the technology at a high level.

The practical comparison is between two complete rendering paths, not simply “AI” versus “real” pixels. A strong DLSS implementation may look sharper or more stable than a game’s native rendering with a softer anti-aliasing option. In another game—or in a scene with fine moving detail—native rendering may preserve information that reconstruction misses or changes. Judge the game and scene you actually play.

What is the difference between DLSS Super Resolution, DLAA, and frame generation?

These features affect rendering in different ways. Keep them separate when evaluating image quality.

Technology What it does How to treat it in a comparison
Native rendering Renders the game at the selected output resolution; the game may still apply anti-aliasing or other image processing. Record the native anti-aliasing option. “Native” does not mean unfiltered.
DLSS Super Resolution Reconstructs the requested output resolution from a lower-resolution internal render. Record the DLSS mode and, if available, internal render resolution.
DLAA Uses DLSS technology for anti-aliasing at native resolution rather than taking the lower-resolution upscaling path. Compare it as a separate native-resolution anti-aliasing option, not as Super Resolution.
Frame generation A separate frame-rate technology that generates additional frames. Disable it or report it separately; it is not a Super Resolution image-quality setting.

NVIDIA distinguishes Super Resolution from DLAA in its driver installation guide. DLSS features and support vary by GPU generation; support for one component should not be assumed to mean support for every DLSS feature.

Does DLSS look worse than native?

It can, especially when the scene contains information that is difficult to reconstruct from earlier frames or a lower-resolution input. It can also look similar to native rendering or produce a more pleasing result than a game’s native anti-aliasing. Neither outcome follows from the label alone.

Temporal reconstruction can make fine detail unstable: thin edges may shimmer or crawl as the camera moves; foliage, wires, particles, and repeating patterns can lose definition; and moving objects or newly revealed areas can show ghosting or smearing. Ray-traced lighting and reflections can also expose problems in some implementations. These are possible failure modes, not effects present in every game.

Newer models can improve particular cases without eliminating all artifacts. NVIDIA says its DLSS 4.5 second-generation transformer model improves image quality and temporal stability, and highlights Performance and Ultra Performance as modes with especially strong quality-to-performance benefits. Those are NVIDIA’s claims about the technology; they do not guarantee the same result in every supported game. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement describes the update.

Independent testing illustrates why results need context. Digital Foundry’s January 23, 2026 review found improvements in tested scenarios while still identifying issues with some ray-tracing effects. PC Gamer reported less pixel crawling and better temporal stability in its examples; it also notes that Performance mode at 1080p uses a 540p internal render resolution. These are observations from those tests, not universal results for every game or hardware configuration. Digital Foundry’s DLSS 4.5 review and PC Gamer’s testing and setup guide discuss their respective findings.

Does DLSS improve FPS?

DLSS Super Resolution can improve frame rate because the game directly renders fewer pixels before reconstruction. The size of any improvement depends on the selected mode, output resolution, game, GPU and CPU load, and implementation. If the CPU is limiting performance, reducing the internal render resolution may produce little change; there is no broadly applicable performance multiplier for DLSS versus native rendering.

A more aggressive mode uses a lower-resolution internal image and asks reconstruction to recover more detail. That can increase performance headroom while making difficult details harder to preserve. As one bounded example, PC Gamer reports a 540p internal render for DLSS Performance mode at a 1080p output in its DLSS 4.5 testing. That figure describes the tested mode and resolution—not all DLSS modes, games, or settings.

Measure frame rate independently from image quality. If frame generation is enabled, report it separately: the resulting frame-rate number does not isolate the effect of Super Resolution.

How to compare DLSS with native rendering fairly

A useful comparison holds the output constant and varies the rendering path. One screenshot is not enough to assess a temporal technique, because artifacts often appear only as the camera or scene changes.

  1. Choose one game and a repeatable scene. Use the same save, location, camera position, and camera movement for each run.
  2. Fix the output resolution and graphics settings. Keep the display target, quality settings, and ray-tracing options the same.
  3. Record both rendering paths. Note the DLSS mode and model or preset, plus internal render resolution if the game exposes it. For native rendering, record the anti-aliasing option.
  4. Keep frame generation out of the image-quality test. Disable it, or report its results separately from Super Resolution.
  5. Inspect still frames and motion. Check thin geometry, foliage, wires, particles, moving objects, newly revealed areas, and ray-traced light or reflections. Look for lost detail, ghosting, shimmer, and changes over time.
  6. Measure performance separately. Record frame rate under the same conditions and identify the GPU, game version, settings, and DLSS configuration. Treat the result as specific to that setup.

For additional context, Tom’s Hardware reported that DLSS 4.5 received 48.2% of votes in ComputerBase’s blind test across six games at 4K. That is a preference result from a particular sample and setup, not a technical measurement proving that DLSS is generally superior to native rendering. Tom’s Hardware’s report describes the test.

What hardware do you need for DLSS?

DLSS Super Resolution is an RTX graphics-card use case, but the supported feature set differs across GPU generations. Check the requirements for the specific DLSS component and game rather than assuming every RTX card supports every DLSS feature. NVIDIA’s DLSS overview and driver guide provide the relevant feature definitions and support context. If you are checking hardware categories, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX graphics cards page lists its product family.
