Players read a space, use darkness and Sam Fisher’s night vision to move unseen, and look for ways past guards rather than treating every encounter as a gunfight. Later entries changed how much freedom, improvisation, and action the stealth loop allowed.
Light and shadow are part of the rules
In the early games, darkness is a practical tool. Ubisoft Toronto says the original used dynamic lighting that let players shoot out lights, darkening an area enough to make Sam’s night-vision goggles useful. Producer Mathieu Ferland also recalled that the team had to adapt the Unreal engine to support its lighting system. Ubisoft Toronto’s 20th-anniversary feature and a GameSpot interview with Ferland describe those design choices.
That makes visibility something to manage actively: notice the lit areas, consider whether a light source can be removed, and use night vision to navigate the resulting darkness. Night vision helps you see; it does not itself make Sam invisible. The point is that the environment communicates a stealth problem the player can solve.
The main challenge is getting past guards
Ubisoft Toronto describes the intended play as observing a situation and working out how to get through without being noticed, rather than approaching each enemy with a gun. That shifts attention toward patrols, timing, cover, and a route through the space. A guard is not automatically a target; avoiding a confrontation can be the successful outcome.

- Incredible real movement and control - you can even shift Sam's weight when preparing him for a split jump between two walls
- Exciting new moves maximize Sam's lethal fighting skills -- spin out of the shadows and kill silently
- All-new moves and levels - fight in jungles, on rooftops, on top of(and under) a moving train
- Advanced AI makes it harder than ever to get past enemies - if you reveal yourself they'll get reinforcements and put on armor
- Weapons now have secondary functions that can be equipped on the fly - be amazed at the advantage you get from the red dot of the laser sight
Creative director Chris Auty said the remake team wanted the entire game to be playable from beginning to end without a single kill. That is a stated design goal from Ubisoft Toronto’s November 17, 2022 feature, not proof that a released remake meets it or a guarantee about every earlier game.
How the stealth approach changes across the series
The series does not use one identical stealth formula. Ubisoft’s descriptions point to changes in route freedom and in what happens when a player is spotted. These are differences in design intention, not a measured ranking of which game is “more stealthy.”

| Game or period | Visibility and routes | What detection means |
|---|---|---|
| Original Splinter Cell | Dynamic lighting and darkness support hiding; Ubisoft describes progression as more directed than in Chaos Theory. | The central intention is to get past enemies unnoticed. |
| Chaos Theory | Ubisoft highlights multiple entry points and routes, including in the bank mission. | The cited comparison focuses on route design, not a changed detection rule. |
| Conviction | Stealth expands beyond hiding in light and shadow; distractions can redirect attention. | Developer Maxime Béland described being seen as a moment when action can begin, making detection a cue for improvisation rather than only the end of a stealth attempt. |
| Blacklist | The director described an effort to expand both stealth and action. | The stated aim was to restore room for stealth while keeping the action possibilities introduced in Conviction. |
Ubisoft’s account of the series’ level-design evolution uses Chaos Theory’s bank mission to illustrate the move from more directed progression toward multiple routes. For Conviction, Béland’s interview with VideoGamer discusses distractions and the role of detection. In 2012, Blacklist creative director Béland told Game Informer that the earlier games leaned strongly toward stealth, Conviction added action but lost some stealth, and Blacklist aimed to expand both.

In its November 17, 2022 retrospective, Ubisoft Toronto said the Splinter Cell remake was being rebuilt using Snowdrop and that the team planned advances in AI engagement, lighting, animation, and audio while keeping dynamic lighting and shadows central. Those comments describe development direction at that time. They do not establish a current release date or confirm the final mechanics of a released game.
