When must you stop for a Florida school bus?
Florida Statutes § 316.172 requires a driver approaching a school bus displaying its stop signal to “bring such vehicle to a full stop while the bus is stopped.” You must not pass until the signal is withdrawn. When may opposite-direction traffic continue?
Traffic traveling in the opposite direction may continue only if the highway is divided by at least one of these features:

- A physical barrier.
The exception depends on the divider, not simply the number of lanes. A multilane road without one of the specified separations does not qualify. Florida DOT’s older safety guidance explains that traffic in both directions must stop on a two-lane road and where the roadway is paved across; it advises opposite-direction traffic on a divided roadway to proceed with caution. What are the penalties?
Florida distinguishes failing to stop from passing on the side where children enter or exit the bus. The statutory penalty amounts below took effect July 1, 2026, under Chapter 2026-112. Chapter 2026-112, Laws of Florida

Repeat offenses and license suspension
A second or subsequent offense within five years can also result in a license suspension. The ranges differ by offense category:
- Repeat failure-to-stop offenses under paragraph (a): 180 days to one year.
- Repeat passing-on-the-children’s-side offenses under paragraph (b): 360 days to two years.

How do camera-enforced violations work?
Florida permits school districts to use school-bus infraction detection systems and contract for their installation, operation, or maintenance. A vendor may not be paid based on the number of violations detected. Before a district begins a program, it must conduct a 30-day public-awareness period during which it may issue warnings only. Florida Statutes § 316.173
Recorded evidence goes to an authorized law-enforcement agency for review. If the agency determines a violation occurred, it sends a notice to the vehicle’s registered owner. The notice must provide images, the date, time and location, the penalty and payment instructions, hearing instructions, and information about viewing the video and images. Those recordings create a rebuttable presumption of a violation; the statute also identifies circumstances in which the registered owner is not liable, including when the vehicle was in another person’s care, custody, or control. What to do after receiving a notice
- Review the notice and the available images and video, including the recorded location and time.
- Within 60 days after the notice is sent, pay, submit an affidavit, or request an administrative hearing. Taking one of these actions within that period avoids court fees, costs, and issuance of a uniform traffic citation under the notice procedure.
- If the vehicle was in another person’s care, custody, or control, review the statutory affidavit process and the notice’s instructions rather than assuming the registered owner is automatically liable.
