OpenPayd alternatives worth comparing include Wise Platform and Airwallex, but they are not interchangeable products. OpenPayd is a closer fit when a business needs embedded accounts, virtual IBANs, FX and payouts; Wise Platform offers distinct partner models for international transfers and account services; Airwallex is especially relevant when payment acceptance, checkout or marketplace seller flows are central. The right choice depends on who owns the funds flow, which countries and rails are required, and which compliance duties the provider will take on.
Start with the funds flow, not the provider name
“Payment infrastructure” can mean very different things: managing a company’s treasury, providing financial accounts to customers, receiving customer payments, converting currencies, or paying marketplace sellers. A checkout product may solve merchant acceptance without supplying the account structure a platform needs. An account API may support balances and payouts without replacing an acquirer or checkout integration.
Before comparing providers, map the flow: who sends the money, whose funds are held or managed, who receives them, whether funds need to be split, and where currency conversion occurs. Then confirm which service and contracting entity can support that flow in each target market.
How the three platforms differ
OpenPayd: accounts, FX and payouts for digital businesses
OpenPayd describes an API-led financial infrastructure offering for digital businesses, including accounts, payments, traditional FX and digital-asset trading. Its materials describe named virtual IBANs, multi-currency accounts, a REST API, a payments dashboard and a sandbox for testing account and payment functions. Its BaaS and marketplace descriptions also cover accounts, FX and global payouts for businesses making or receiving international payments. These capabilities make it a natural candidate when the requirement combines account infrastructure with payments and currency services.

OpenPayd says it processes more than $300 billion annually. The reviewed homepage did not display a publication year for that figure, and it is a company claim rather than an independently validated statistic.
Wise Platform: choose the partner model that matches the business
Wise documents three different ways to work with its platform. Embedded partners are regulated financial institutions and fintech platforms that offer Wise services within their own products. Enterprise partners use Wise’s API to manage their own funds, such as paying employees or vendors. Correspondent partners are regulated financial institutions using Wise infrastructure for cross-border payments to their own customers.

- Use the, easy-to-use, and customizable POS to get started.
The model affects onboarding and authorization as well as the available transfer, balance and card functions. Wise also describes partner verification and customer KYC/KYB requirements; the allocation of due-diligence responsibilities depends on the arrangement. Its developer homepage advertises accounts in 160+ countries and receipt in 40+ currencies, alongside global payments and card issuing. Those are Wise-published claims, not a guarantee that a particular company, service or customer will be eligible in every listed market.
Airwallex: pay-ins, checkout and marketplace payment flows
Airwallex’s payments offering emphasizes accepting payments, with hosted checkout, APIs and mobile SDKs. The company advertises more than 160 payment methods, local-currency pricing, like-for-like settlement, and fraud and dispute-management features. For platforms and marketplaces, it describes connected accounts, onboarding and compliance workflows, fund-flow management, and the ability to split proceeds or route funds to sellers after platform fees.

That makes Airwallex a relevant option when merchant pay-ins or marketplace seller settlement are central. Its payments-page claims do not establish that it matches every OpenPayd requirement for accounts, virtual IBANs, FX or digital-asset services.
Comparison at a glance
| Platform | Documented emphasis | Most relevant when | What to validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenPayd | Accounts, named virtual IBANs, payments, traditional FX and digital-asset trading; REST API and sandbox. | The product needs embedded business or customer accounts alongside FX and payouts. | Eligible services and contracting entity in each target geography; account structure, rails, compliance responsibilities and digital-asset scope. |
| Wise Platform | Embedded, enterprise and correspondent partner models; transfers, balances and cards vary by arrangement. | The use case maps to one of Wise’s partner models and involves international transfers, receiving funds, balances or cards. | Which partner model applies, what functions it enables, onboarding requirements and who handles customer KYC/KYB. |
| Airwallex | Payment acceptance, checkout, local payment methods and marketplace connected-account and seller-payment flows. | The priority is pay-in acceptance, checkout or routing marketplace proceeds to sellers. | Country and method coverage for the specific business, settlement options, connected-account terms, and whether separate account or FX needs are met. |
The platforms’ headline figures measure different things and should not be treated as a ranking: Wise advertises country and currency coverage, while Airwallex advertises payment-method count. Neither comparison establishes availability for a particular business profile.

Questions to settle before shortlisting
Where will the service be available, and who contracts with you?
Ask which countries and currencies are enabled for the exact product, which legal entity will contract with your business, and what local restrictions apply. OpenPayd states that the relevant entity depends on location and service; “global” in a product description is not proof that every feature is available in every jurisdiction.
Who handles compliance and funds responsibilities?
Establish who performs customer due diligence, who holds or safeguards funds, which party is responsible for payment obligations, and which licenses are relevant to the specific flow. Wise’s documentation makes KYC/KYB and partner responsibilities dependent on the model. OpenPayd identifies different entities for different services. Get the allocation in writing for your proposed setup rather than assuming the platform takes every responsibility.

Which accounts, rails and settlement functions are actually required?
Specify whether you need named or virtual IBANs, pooled or segregated accounts, particular currencies, local payment rails, international transfers, receipt capabilities, FX conversion, or a particular payout speed. Match each requirement to a service in the markets you plan to launch. A provider’s general account or payment description does not confirm the account structure or rail coverage for your case.
Does the integration support day-to-day operations?
Assess API documentation and sandbox access alongside webhooks, reconciliation, support, uptime commitments, migration requirements and contractual remedies. OpenPayd advertises a REST API and sandbox, but the reviewed provider materials do not establish comparable contractual service levels across the three platforms. Request the operational and service commitments that would apply to your contract.
Build a fair commercial comparison
The reviewed official provider pages do not establish comparable current pricing. A “cheapest” ranking would therefore be unsupported. Request quotes using the same business profile and transaction mix, including volumes, currencies and conversion patterns, payout destinations, account model, compliance scope and support tier. Include implementation and migration needs in the comparison, not only per-transaction charges.
Which provider belongs on the shortlist?
- Keep OpenPayd in consideration if the core need is embedded accounts, virtual IBANs, FX and payouts, especially where traditional and digital-asset services are both relevant. Verify the entity and product availability for the intended markets.
- Consider Wise Platform if the business fits its embedded, enterprise or correspondent model for transfers, balances, receiving funds or cards. Confirm the specific model and KYC/KYB arrangement.
- Consider Airwallex if acceptance of global pay-ins, local payment methods, checkout integration or marketplace seller flows is the priority. Confirm that the required regions, accounts and rails are covered for the intended flow.
This is a practical shortlist, not a universal ranking. Public product pages do not establish full country-by-service matrices, acceptance rules or contract-level service commitments for one common business profile, so the final comparison should be based on providers’ answers for the same use case.
