If a WebDAV drive will not connect in Windows, first identify whether the failure is caused by the server or URL, the Windows WebClient service, authentication or proxy handling, or a limit affecting large files and folder listings. Start with reachability and service checks; save authentication and registry changes for cases where the symptoms point to them.
First, identify what is failing
Record the complete error and when it appears. A drive that has never mapped points to a different set of checks than one that connects but fails after sign-in or restart. Note whether the same URL works in a browser or another WebDAV client, whether Windows prompts repeatedly for credentials, and whether only large transfers or folder listings fail.
- Never maps: check the URL, server availability, WebDAV configuration, and the Windows WebClient service.
- Maps but will not reconnect after sign-in or restart: investigate authentication, proxy context, and the Windows version involved.
- Small items work but large files or folder listings fail: investigate WebClient limits only after basic connectivity is established.
Windows error wording can help narrow the issue. Microsoft documents “The network path was not found” (error 0x80070035) and “The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not been authenticated” (error 1244) for a particular Windows 7 reconnect scenario. Error 67, “The network name cannot be found,” is another mapping failure discussed in Microsoft’s WebDAV Redirector documentation.
Check the URL, server, and WebClient service
Verify the exact WebDAV URL, including its host name and path, and confirm that the host resolves and can be reached from the PC. If you do not administer the server, ask its owner to confirm that WebDAV is enabled and the service is available. A browser opening the site does not by itself prove that Windows’ WebDAV redirector can map it.

Microsoft lists several possible causes of error 67 in its redirector guidance: an IIS server may be missing or stopped, the WebDAV Redirector may not be installed, the WebClient service may not be running, WebDAV may not be enabled on the website, or authentication and proxy handling may be incompatible with the connection. These are possibilities, not a claim that every WebDAV endpoint uses IIS.
Check whether the Windows WebClient service is available and running. A stopped service can prevent mapping, but starting or restarting it will not resolve a wrong URL, unavailable server, or authentication mismatch.

Diagnose authentication and reconnect failures
If the drive maps at first but appears disconnected after logon or restart, distinguish the credentials saved in Windows from the authentication scheme accepted by the server. Proxy configuration can also affect whether Windows sends credentials. For one documented case, Microsoft explains that the WebDAV redirector uses WinHTTP and states: “In a non-proxy network configuration, WinHTTP sends user credentials only in response to requests that occur on a local intranet site.” See Microsoft’s explanation of the ‘User has not been authenticated’ error for a mapped web share.
For a known internal host, an administrator may consider Microsoft’s documented AuthForwardServerList setting to allow credential forwarding to specified URL patterns. This is a security-sensitive change: matching servers can receive credentials, so entries should be narrowly scoped and reviewed by an administrator. Do not use a broad wildcard or forward credentials to an unknown Internet host. Microsoft says this setting does not override behavior for Basic or Digest authentication. After changing the setting, WebClient must be restarted.

Use secure transport
Do not enable Basic Authentication over plain HTTP as a general workaround. Microsoft says the WebDAV Redirector disables Basic Authentication by default except for SSL sites and warns that Basic Authentication on a non-SSL connection sends the user name and password in clear text. Use HTTPS and an authentication configuration approved by the server administrator.
Keep Windows 7 reconnect guidance version-specific
Microsoft’s Windows 7 article addresses a specific case in which a DAV share using Basic Authentication cannot automatically reconnect because Credential Manager credentials cannot be retrieved by WinHTTP for that scenario. The documented alternatives are to disconnect and reconnect or use an authentication scheme that supports persistent credentials. This guidance is specific to the Windows 7 behavior described there; it should not be assumed to describe every current Windows release or server configuration. Investigate WebClient limits when files or listings fail
If the connection works but large files fail or a folder listing is incomplete, compare the symptoms with the WebClient properties documented in Microsoft’s WebDAV Redirector reference. It describes settings including FileSizeLimitInBytes and FileAttributesLimitInBytes. The reference gives a default of 1,000,000 bytes (1 MB) for FileAttributesLimitInBytes; this is a configuration default, not a general limit on every WebDAV server or every file.
Registry tuning is a later diagnostic step, not a first fix. Incorrect registry changes can cause serious problems. If an administrator determines a change is appropriate, record the original value, follow current guidance for the relevant Windows configuration, and restart WebClient after changing the documented parameters.
