Starship’s Raptor engines burn liquid methane with liquid oxygen. SpaceX classifies Raptor as a reusable staged-combustion engine: turbopumps feed propellants at high pressure, combustion begins in preburners to drive the pumps, and the propellants then burn in a main chamber. Expanding exhaust through the nozzle produces thrust. Raptor engines power both Starship stages, with sea-level and vacuum-optimized variants assigned to different jobs.
How staged combustion produces thrust
Rocket propellants must reach the main combustion chamber at high pressure and flow rate. Raptor uses turbopumps to move and pressurize its liquid methane and liquid oxygen. In a staged-combustion cycle, some propellant burns in preburners first. The resulting hot gas drives the turbines connected to the pumps; the flow then goes on to the main chamber, where combustion produces the exhaust that accelerates through the nozzle.
NASA’s general explanation of full-flow staged combustion describes separate fuel-rich and oxidizer-rich preburners driving the fuel and oxygen turbopumps, respectively. Both flows continue to the main chamber. Using all propellant flow in the preburners can provide more turbine-driving mass flow than a conventional staged-combustion arrangement, while lower turbine temperatures can reduce turbine stress. This describes the cycle in general, not a verified, complete diagram of Raptor’s current internal plumbing or a guarantee of service life or reliability. NASA’s explanation of full-flow staged combustion provides the cycle-level context.
SpaceX identifies Raptor as a methane–oxygen staged-combustion engine, but its public vehicle information does not provide a complete current internal flow schematic. Therefore, the broad pump, preburner, chamber, and nozzle sequence explains staged combustion without asserting unverified Raptor-specific routing details. SpaceX’s Starship page identifies the engine type and vehicle use.

Why Raptor burns methane and oxygen
Raptor’s propellants are liquid methane (CH₄) and liquid oxygen (LOX). The propellants react in the main chamber, releasing hot gas; the nozzle directs and accelerates that gas to create thrust. Both Starship and Super Heavy use Raptor engines, so the same basic propulsion system serves the upper stage and booster.
Where the engine variants fit
SpaceX’s published Starship configuration describes three sea-level Raptor engines and three Raptor Vacuum engines on the upper stage, and 33 Raptors on Super Heavy. The vacuum-optimized engines are designed for use in space. These are SpaceX’s published configuration figures at the time of its page; engine and vehicle configurations can change as the system is revised. SpaceX’s Starship page is the source for these counts and the stated role of the vacuum variant.

Raptor 3: SpaceX’s published figures
In a May 2025 update, SpaceX gave the following specifications for Raptor 3. They are variant-specific manufacturer figures, not specifications for every Raptor generation.

SpaceX also says Raptor 3 integrates sensors and controllers, includes thermal protection, removes individual engine shrouds, and uses a redesigned ignition system. The update describes mass savings at the vehicle level. Those design details and specifications are SpaceX’s published claims; they should not be read as independent performance measurements. What a flight report reveals—and what it does not
In its September 28, 2026 account of Flight 14, SpaceX reported that Super Heavy ignited all 33 Raptor 3 engines at launch. It also reported that Starship’s upper stage ignited its six engines after hot staging, and described later engine operations on both vehicles. This illustrates how the engines participate in the flight sequence, but a flight account does not disclose a complete internal startup procedure. It is not a basis for inferring valve timing or other unpublished ignition details. SpaceX’s Flight 14 account describes the reported vehicle events.

When comparing Raptor figures with those for another engine, match like with like: propellants, combustion cycle, pump and preburner arrangement, intended stage and nozzle, and the named engine version. Also distinguish a manufacturer specification from a test result or an independently reviewed measurement. A thrust figure without its variant and sea-level or vacuum context can be misleading.
