How a Submarine Differs from a Surface Ship

A submarine’s defining difference is its ability to operate underwater. See how ballast, hydroplanes, propulsion, sonar and mission distinguish it from a surface ship.

A submarine is built to operate below the waterline as well as on the surface; a conventional surface ship is designed primarily to operate on top of the water. That difference shapes how each vessel controls movement, gathers information, and balances concealment with awareness and communication. The details vary by class, country, and era.

How does a submarine dive and control its depth?

A submarine changes its buoyancy to submerge, then uses control surfaces to manage its depth while moving. These are related but distinct functions: ballast helps the boat transition between floating and submerged conditions, while hydroplanes help it rise or descend underway.

Ballast changes buoyancy

A useful historical illustration is the U.S. Navy museum’s account of USS Pampanito, a World War II submarine. When surfaced, the boat operated much like a surface vessel, with trapped air helping it remain positively buoyant. Opening the main vent allowed seawater into ballast tanks, moving the boat toward neutral buoyancy for a dive. That example explains the principle, not the exact tank layout or procedures of every modern submarine. The Navy museum’s submarine lesson describes the role of ballast in submerging.

Hydroplanes help control depth underway

Once moving underwater, a submarine uses hydroplanes—control surfaces that help it ascend or descend, in a way the Navy museum compares to an aircraft using its control surfaces. Ballast does not steer the submarine by itself. Underwater terrain can also constrain where it can travel.

How do submarine and surface-ship propulsion differ?

There is no single propulsion system that defines a submarine. Power arrangements vary with design and era, just as surface-vessel propulsion varies by class. USS Pampanito used diesel engines to drive generators while surfaced, then batteries and electric motors while submerged. By contrast, the U.S. Navy describes its cited modern attack-submarine classes as nuclear-powered. Neither example should be treated as universal. The National Park Service’s USS Pampanito account describes the historical diesel-electric arrangement.

Submarine design has also changed over time. NAVSEA’s historical account notes that some early fleet boats were more like surface ships that could submerge when useful. Discussing World War II-era fleet boats, Harrison, director of NAVSEA Combatant Ships Division, said: “The fleet boat was basically a surface ship that could submerge when it was convenient to do so, but really would prefer to operate more on the surface of the ocean.” That historical description is not a characterization of modern submarines. NAVSEA’s history of submarine engineering provides the context.

How do they sense what is around them?

Underwater, sound is central to submarine sensing. Passive sonar listens for sounds; active sonar sends out a pulse and detects returning sound. The Navy museum describes sonar as helping submarines find objects and avoid underwater obstacles. A periscope or other mast can provide information when a submarine is near the surface, but it does not give a submerged vessel the same broad view that a ship’s bridge provides.

Sonar is not exclusive to submarines. Surface vessels can carry it too: the U.S. Navy describes the AN/SQQ-89(V) as a surface-ship anti-submarine warfare system. So the difference is not “submarines have sonar, ships have radar”; sensing equipment depends on the vessel and its mission. The Navy museum’s sonar lesson explains passive and active sonar, while the Navy’s AN/SQQ-89(V) fact file describes the surface-ship system.

Are submarines invisible to other vessels?

No. Submarines are designed to make concealment an advantage, but they are not invisible. Surfacing can expose a submarine, and noise, emissions, and operating conditions affect how detectable it may be. The historical doctrine archive describes a submerged submarine as a strong listening platform relative to surface craft; that is historical context, not a statement of current tactical doctrine. The Navy museum’s material on submarine sensing and surfacing discusses these trade-offs.

How do hulls, handling, and missions vary?

Submarines and surface ships both depend on hull and propulsor design for how they handle. NAVSEA identifies factors including controllability, mobility, seakeeping, propeller noise, safety, efficiency, and cost. There is no single hull form shared by all submarines or all surface ships, and these engineering factors do not establish a general performance ranking between the two categories. NAVSEA’s submarine-engineering history discusses design considerations.

Revell RV05167 Kit 1:144-German Submarine Type IX C/40 (U190), Unpainted
  • Revell Kit 1:144 - German Submarine Type IX C/40 (U190)
  • Included components: Parts for one model
  • Model Number: RV05167

Mission depends on the specific class. For example, the U.S. Navy lists attack-submarine roles that include seeking submarines and surface ships, intelligence and surveillance, mine warfare, projecting power ashore, and supporting other forces. Those are U.S. SSN examples, not a definition of every submarine. Surface ships likewise range from destroyers and carriers to amphibious and support vessels. A meaningful vessel-to-vessel comparison should identify the country, class, era, and mission rather than compare unrelated ships as though either category were uniform. The U.S. Navy attack-submarine fact file, updated 24 November 2025, gives examples of SSN roles and class-specific figures.

U.S. Navy class example Published submerged displacement Published speed
Seawolf-class SSNs 21 and 22 9,138 tons (9,284 metric tons) 25+ knots (28+ miles per hour; 46.3+ kph), the published Seawolf-class figure
Seawolf-class SSN 23 12,158 tons (12,353 metric tons) 25+ knots (28+ miles per hour; 46.3+ kph), the published Seawolf-class figure
Virginia class Approximately 7,800 tons (7,925 metric tons); 10,200 tons (10,363.7 metric tons) with Virginia Payload Module not stated (United States Navy fact file, updated 24 November 2025)

These are figures for particular U.S. Navy classes and, for the Seawolf displacement, named vessels—not averages for submarines or a like-for-like comparison with surface ships. The Navy fact file supplies the class-specific values.
