How the two retailers approach low prices
ALDI’s compact, curated format
ALDI describes its stores as a no-frills operation with a smaller layout, popular grocery items, and a focus on exclusive brands. Products displayed in their original shipping boxes can reduce restocking work, according to the company’s history and store-model description. The curated selection can mean fewer brand choices or direct equivalents than in a broad-assortment store, so a comparison needs to account for what each location actually carries.
Walmart’s scale and supply chain
Walmart says its Everyday Low Prices approach relies on volume purchasing, direct supplier relationships, and supply-chain efficiencies. The company also says roughly 90% of the U.S. population lives within 10 miles of a Walmart, a figure it uses to explain its ability to buy in volume and operate its supply chain. These are Walmart’s explanations of its pricing model, not independent proof that a particular product is cheaper there.
Scale and store format help explain how the chains pursue low prices; they do not establish a universal winner. Walmart’s CEO wrote in a September 25, 2026 letter that product costs can change when the retailer’s costs to buy or transport goods change. That is one reason everyday prices can shift over time even within a retailer’s broader pricing strategy.

Why a price comparison can be misleading
Different products and package sizes
A store-brand item is not automatically equivalent to another store’s item, and package sizes often differ. Compare the same product type and quantity where possible. If sizes differ, use the shelf’s unit price—such as price per ounce, pound, or count—rather than comparing package totals alone.
Different comparison baskets
Retailer savings claims may use unlike comparison methods. Walmart’s April 2026 Great Value announcement says an average family could save 35% per year against national brands, based on a conceptual basket of selected, high-penetration items in food categories where Great Value is available. Walmart says that figure is not a claim about total grocery spending. ALDI’s 2025 price-leadership report is described in search results as comparing its private-label products with competitors’ private-label equivalents, but its detailed method and figures could not be verified. Neither claim is a neutral, matched full-basket comparison between ALDI and Walmart.

Why prices vary by store, channel, and week
The price you see can depend on the particular store, online or in-store channel, inventory, local competition, markdowns, and timing. Walmart says store prices may differ for those reasons, and its online assortment and prices may not match what is available in a store. ALDI also says prices and availability vary by store.
Temporary offers can change which store is cheaper for a specific list. ALDI announced fall 2026 price reductions running from September 23 through at least November 3, 2026, and estimated $86 million in savings based on internal pricing and projected sales-volume analysis for that period. Actual savings, prices, and availability may vary by store. Walmart identifies Rollbacks and other offers as additional ways to save. Treat these as time-limited offers, not permanent differences between the chains.

How to compare grocery prices fairly
- Start with your regular list. Choose groceries your household buys often; a retailer’s promotional or conceptual basket may not match yours.
- Match the product. Compare the same national brand and size when available. For store brands, compare like with like where possible, and label any substitution rather than treating it as identical.
- Use unit prices. When package sizes differ, compare the price per ounce, pound, or count.
- Check the same local market and date. Use nearby stores and record prices at roughly the same time, so a local difference or price change does not skew the comparison.
- Separate regular prices from deals. Note sales, Rollbacks, coupons, and pickup or delivery prices separately from ordinary shelf prices.
- Check availability and added costs. A listed price is not useful if the item is unavailable locally; include delivery fees or other channel costs if they apply to your trip.
This produces an answer for your own basket and shopping conditions. The available company explanations and claims do not establish that ALDI or Walmart is always cheaper.
