Astute is the Royal Navy’s successor to the Trafalgar-class attack submarines. Official descriptions show the newer class is larger, uses video-based horizon scanning instead of a traditional optical periscope, and is equipped for land-attack missions as well as torpedo warfare. Both classes belong to the Royal Navy’s nuclear-powered attack-submarine lineage; nuclear propulsion does not mean nuclear-armed.
What changed when Astute replaced Trafalgar?
The Astute class took over the attack-submarine role from Trafalgar. The Royal Navy described that handover in May 2022, when HMS Talent and HMS Trenchant were decommissioned and HMS Triumph was reported as remaining in service. That is a dated account, not a statement of today’s Trafalgar fleet status. The Ministry of Defence’s 2025 update also identifies Astute as the replacement class.
For readers comparing generations, the clearest documented differences are Astute’s larger published size, its video horizon-scanning equipment, and official descriptions of its sensors and weapons. The available official sources do not provide a matched technical specification sheet for both classes, so a precise item-by-item comparison is not established for every measure.
How much larger is Astute?
The Royal Navy lists the Astute class at 97 metres long and 7,400 tonnes. In a 2014 announcement, the Ministry of Defence described Astute as 50 per cent bigger than the then-current Trafalgar class. That percentage is a government comparison made in 2014; it should not be treated as a newly measured ratio or as a matched table of exact dimensions.

- Plastic model kit
- Paints sold separately unless stated
The sources cited here do not establish an exact Trafalgar length or displacement in directly comparable form. For that reason, the defensible comparison is Astute’s published figures alongside the MOD’s dated relative comparison—not an inferred Trafalgar specification.
How do their periscopes and sensors differ?
Video horizon scanning
Astute uses high-specification video technology for horizon scanning rather than a traditional optical periscope arrangement. The MOD’s 2014 account described it as the first Royal Navy submarine class without optical periscopes. The change is a difference in how the crew obtains an above-water view; it does not, on its own, establish that every aspect of the two classes’ surveillance systems is directly comparable.

- This is a plastic model kit (unbuilt / unpainted) - NOT A TOY
- ASSEMBLY AND PAINTING REQUIRED (glue and paint not included)
- Contains parts to build one model.
Sonar
The Royal Navy identifies Sonar 2076 on Astute, including hull-mounted and towed arrays. The official sources used here do not give a comparable Trafalgar sonar specification, so a claim that one class has a particular numerical or performance advantage over the other cannot be made from this evidence.
What weapons and missions are documented for Astute?
Official Astute descriptions list Tomahawk land-attack missiles and Spearfish heavyweight torpedoes. The MOD’s 2025 update characterizes the class as nuclear-powered but conventionally armed: its reactor supplies propulsion, while its weapons are conventional. The update also describes sea and land-attack missions and support to maritime task groups and special forces.

A Royal Navy page for HMS Audacious, one Astute-class boat, says it has provision for up to 38 weapons in six 21-inch torpedo tubes. That is an individual-boat capability description, not a figure to assume for every class member without a corresponding source. The official material cited here does not support a like-for-like Trafalgar weapon-capacity comparison.
What can be compared—and what remains unverified?
| Comparison | Astute | Trafalgar |
|---|---|---|
| Role and generation | Successor attack-submarine class; nuclear-powered and conventionally armed, according to the MOD’s 2025 update. | Predecessor class in the Royal Navy attack-submarine role; the Royal Navy’s May 2022 transition report is a dated account. |
| Size | 97 metres and 7,400 tonnes, listed by the Royal Navy. | Exact length and displacement are not established here in a directly comparable official specification. In 2014, the MOD said Astute was 50 per cent bigger than the then-current Trafalgar class. |
| Horizon scanning | High-specification video technology; no traditional optical periscope arrangement. | The MOD’s 2014 comparison identifies the contrast with Astute’s optical-periscope-free design; no further detailed Trafalgar system specification is established here. |
| Sonar | Sonar 2076, including hull and towed arrays. | A comparable sonar specification is not stated in the official sources cited here. |
| Weapons | Tomahawk missiles and Spearfish torpedoes are listed. HMS Audacious’s page states provision for up to 38 weapons in six 21-inch tubes. | A directly comparable weapon-capacity figure is not stated in the official sources cited here. |
| Endurance | The MOD says Astute can circumnavigate the globe submerged and make its own oxygen and drinking water. | A quantitative comparison is not stated in the official sources cited here. |

What does the available information not establish?
The cited official sources do not supply matched Trafalgar figures for length, displacement, crew, speed, weapon capacity, or sonar specifications. They also do not provide a quantitative endurance comparison between the two classes. Those gaps matter: without comparable figures, apparent precision would be misleading. Astute’s 97-metre, 7,400-tonne listing and the MOD’s 2014 “50 per cent bigger” statement are useful, but they answer different questions and come from different forms of evidence.
For transition context, the Royal Navy’s May 2022 account of Talent and Trenchant’s decommissioning records the class handover and reports Triumph’s status at that time. The MOD’s overview of Royal Navy submarine types describes Astute’s role, propulsion, dimensions, and capabilities.
