Before a storm: prepare your household and home
Know your risk and where you would go
Check the FEMA Flood Map Service Center and your local emergency management office for information about flood risks and evacuation routes. A map is a planning aid, not a guarantee that a property will stay dry: Ready.gov says flooding can happen wherever it rains.

Choose destinations on higher ground or at an official shelter, and identify more than one route in case a road is blocked. Learn where household members should meet and how to communicate if separated. Include children, older adults, people with disabilities or medical needs, and pets in the plan. Practice the route and shelter plan before severe weather.

Sign up for alerts from local authorities and learn what local warning terms mean. FEMA and Ready.gov identify the Emergency Alert System (EAS), NOAA Weather Radio and local alert systems as ways to receive emergency information. Consider how you will receive alerts if power or mobile service is disrupted; a battery-powered radio can provide another channel, but does not replace local notifications.

Gather supplies and protect important items
Keep several days’ worth of food, water, medicines and cleaning supplies, along with batteries and phone-charging devices. Store important documents in a waterproof container and keep password-protected digital copies. Make sure needed medications and supplies are ready to take if you have to leave quickly.
Some measures may reduce damage, depending on the home and its drainage. Move valuables to a higher level, clear drains and gutters, and ask a qualified professional or local official whether elevating critical utilities, installing a backwater valve or using sandbags is appropriate. A battery-operated sump pump may help where the home’s drainage setup makes it suitable. These steps cannot make floodwater safe or guarantee that a home will not flood.

Review flood insurance before a storm
Ready.gov says standard homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover flooding and that flood insurance typically takes up to 30 days to take effect. Check current coverage, eligibility, exceptions and waiting-period terms with the National Flood Insurance Program and your insurer well before a storm; do not assume a policy will cover a particular loss.

Follow official instructions and leave when told
Listen for updates from local authorities and evacuate immediately when ordered. Use the route they recommend, and do not drive around barricades. Conditions can change quickly, so do not wait for water to reach your home before acting on an evacuation instruction.

Stay out of floodwater
Never walk, swim or drive through floodwater. Do not enter flooded tunnels or underground roads, and stay off bridges over fast-moving water. Water can conceal hazards and damage beneath the surface. As FEMA warns: “Just six inches of fast-moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.” The National Weather Service campaign wording reproduced in FEMA and Ready.gov guidance is “Turn Around. Don’t Drown!”
If you cannot evacuate safely
Follow local directions about where to shelter. Depending on the situation, that may mean identified safe shelter, higher ground or a higher floor. If trapped inside a building, go to the highest level, but do not enter a closed attic where rising water could leave you trapped.

Avoid getting into a vehicle or onto a route exposed to floodwater. If a vehicle is already trapped in rapidly moving water, Ready.gov advises staying inside; if water rises inside, seek refuge on the roof.
After the water recedes: return and clean up cautiously
Wait for the all-clear and watch for hazards
Return home only when authorities say it is safe. Avoid unnecessary driving, and watch for unstable trees, poles and power lines. Do not touch electrical equipment that is wet or while standing in water. Turn off electricity only if you can do so safely.

- Prepare Now for the El Nino Storm Season: El Nino pushes storms closer to the U.S. coast, leaving as little as 48 hours to prepare. Backup supplies when weather catches you off guard
- Hand-Assembled in New England: Designed by a disaster professional and assembled by a real person, not a faceless factory. Every kit checked by hand before it ships
- Emergency Lifeline When You're Stuck: For flash floods, closed roads, or power outages when you can't reach a store. Below-average hurricane forecast for El Niño doesn't mean no risk-the storm that hits may arrive faster and closer to home
- Upgraded 2026 Version: Premium lined and insulated rain poncho replaces economy version plus expanded comfort kit for extended emergencies
- Comfort-Focused Emergency Kit: Beyond basic first aid with bandages, bacitracin, lip balm, alcohol wipes, PLUS hand lotion and dental pick
Floodwater may contain sewage, bacteria, chemicals, sharp debris or animals, and it may conceal electrical hazards. Keep people and pets out of it. Check with your local health department before using tap water for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth; do not assume it is safe because floodwater has receded.
Use equipment and protective gear safely
Run generators and other fuel-burning equipment outdoors, at least 20 feet from building openings, to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. During cleanup, wear protective clothing, gloves and boots, and use an appropriate face covering when needed. Follow public-health guidance for mold and damaged materials rather than handling them without protection.
Document damage and contact your insurer
Photograph damage when it is safe to do so, then contact your insurer for claims guidance. Documentation can help with the claim process, but it does not guarantee coverage or reimbursement.
