Googlebook FAQ: App Compatibility, Updates, and Support

Googlebook runs Android apps through Google Play, but availability varies. Learn how it handles games and Microsoft 365, what updates Chromebook owners can expect, and the limits on migration and management.

Googlebook is a new laptop category running Googlebook OS, which Google describes as combining ChromeOS and Android technology. It supports Android apps through Google Play and can show apps running on a paired phone, but app availability is not universal. Existing Chromebooks remain supported through their device-specific update lifetimes; Google says ChromeOS updates and security patches will continue through mid-2034.

What is Googlebook, and how do Android apps work?

Googlebook is a distinct laptop category, not simply a new name for every Chromebook. Google describes Googlebook OS as bringing together ChromeOS and Android technology. On a Googlebook, users can install supported Android apps from Google Play. They can also interact with apps running on a paired phone without installing those apps separately on the laptop, according to Google’s Googlebook FAQ.

That does not mean every Android app is available or works identically on a laptop. Google says app availability varies, and some titles require subscriptions. It names Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop, BandLab, and Netflix as examples of available apps, but those examples are not a guarantee of availability in every region or of identical features across devices.

Keyboard apps and launchers have a specific restriction

Google Play on Googlebook currently does not let users discover or install custom Android keyboard apps—also called input method editors, or IMEs—or custom launchers. Android Developers says Googlebook instead supports native system input methods and launchers; Google is evaluating technical opportunities to expand future API support. See the Android Developers compatibility guidance.

Can Googlebook run games?

Google’s FAQ names Candy Crush and Clash Royale as mobile games available through Google Play. It also lists Counter-Strike 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Arc Raiders as PC games accessible through NVIDIA GeForce NOW. That distinction matters: the listed PC games are available by way of a game-streaming service, not as native local installations through Google Play. Availability varies, and some titles or service features may require a subscription, as Google notes in its FAQ.

Can you use Microsoft 365 on Googlebook?

Google says Microsoft 365 can open, edit, download, and save Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint files on Googlebook. Additional functionality requires a Microsoft 365 subscription. The FAQ does not establish that a subscription is included with a Googlebook device; check the Googlebook FAQ for its current compatibility details.

Will an existing Chromebook keep receiving updates?

Yes, through its supported lifetime under Google’s Auto Update policy. In its Chrome Enterprise and Education Help page, updated September 23, 2026, Google says current ChromeOS devices will continue receiving regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. The update end date for an individual Chromebook depends on its model, so check Google’s announcement for ChromeOS device support and the model-specific Auto Update information before making a decision.

Some newer Chromebooks may be eligible to transition to Googlebook OS. Google says qualifying devices purchased today whose ten-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034 will be supported through a transition, with many offering direct migration paths. Eligibility and migration details have not yet been fully shared, so this is not a promise that every Chromebook can migrate.

Optional extended updates on eligible pre-2021 Chromebooks

For eligible Chromebooks released before 2021, Google offers an opt-in path to a total of ten years of automatic updates from the platform’s release. The choice has a significant trade-off: opting in removes Google Play and Android apps, erases on-device Android app data, and cannot be reversed. If an owner does not opt in, automatic updates stop, but Android apps and the Play Store remain installed; app developers may later stop supporting those devices. Review Google’s extended updates support information before choosing.

Is Googlebook ready for school or business fleet management?

Google says the 2026 Googlebook launch targets personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. The first wave of core Googlebook management capabilities is scheduled to start rolling out in the second half of 2027, according to the Chrome Enterprise and Education Help page. Organizations that depend on centrally managed devices should account for that timing when assessing the platform.

How to decide between keeping a Chromebook and considering Googlebook

What to check Existing Chromebook Googlebook
Apps you rely on Check the model, current app availability, and whether each essential app is Android, web-based, or otherwise supported. An extended-update opt-in on eligible pre-2021 devices removes Play and Android apps. Check that each essential Android app is available through Google Play, and whether any required app is accessed from a paired phone or through a service such as GeForce NOW. Google says availability varies.
Updates and migration Use the model-specific Auto Update policy for the device’s support end date. Current ChromeOS devices are slated for regular updates and security patches through mid-2034, but that is not an individual model’s end date. Googlebook is a separate category. Migration is expected for some qualifying newer Chromebooks, but eligibility and paths are not yet fully specified.
Institutional management Evaluate the device under the organization’s existing ChromeOS administration and support requirements. At launch in 2026, domain enrollment and centralized fleet management are not yet supported; the first wave of core management capabilities is scheduled for the second half of 2027.
Subscriptions Verify any subscriptions needed for the apps or services you use. Google says additional Microsoft 365 functionality requires a subscription; some apps and games may also require subscriptions. Hardware does not establish that these services are included.
