Mini LED refers to the backlight; QLED refers to quantum-dot technology used to improve color. A television can use both—for example, Samsung’s Neo QLED and TCL’s QD-Mini LED sets. To choose between TVs, compare the specific models’ picture performance, features, and price, not just their labels.
What Mini LED and QLED mean
Mini LED is a backlighting approach
Mini LED TVs use smaller LEDs in the LCD backlight. That can allow more precise control of light, commonly through independently controlled local-dimming zones. Samsung describes its Mini LED implementation as a more precise backlight-control system (Samsung’s QLED and Neo QLED guide). The number and layout of zones, and the TV’s image processing, affect the result; the Mini LED label alone does not establish picture quality.
QLED uses quantum dots for color
In consumer TV naming, QLED generally means an LCD television that uses quantum-dot technology to improve color. Samsung says its QLED and Neo QLED lines use Quantum Dot technology (Samsung’s QLED and Neo QLED guide). QLED by itself does not tell you whether the TV uses Mini LED backlighting, what local dimming it has, or how well it controls contrast.
Some TVs combine both
Mini LED backlighting and quantum-dot color can be used together. Samsung describes Neo QLED as combining Mini LEDs and Quantum Dot technology; TCL calls its combination QD-Mini LED, or “QLED with Mini LED” (Samsung’s guide; TCL’s QD-Mini LED overview). Names and implementations vary by manufacturer and model, so check the specifications for the exact set.

What to compare when choosing a TV
Local dimming, black levels, and blooming
Check whether the model has local dimming and, if the manufacturer discloses it, how many zones it uses. More zones can allow finer control, but zone count alone does not prove that the TV will produce better blacks or suppress halos. Independent reviews are useful for assessing blooming—the glow that may appear around bright objects on a dark background—as well as shadow detail in dark scenes. TCL identifies local-dimming zones as an important Mini LED picture-quality factor (TCL’s QD-Mini LED overview).
Brightness and HDR
Compare independent measurements of sustained and peak brightness in relevant picture modes, then check which HDR formats each model supports. Brightness can matter in a sunlit room and when displaying highlights in HDR, but results depend on the specific set and test conditions. Samsung positions Neo QLED as advantageous for HDR because of its backlight control; that is Samsung’s product guidance, not proof that every Mini LED TV outperforms every QLED TV (Samsung’s guide).

Color, reflections, and viewing angle
Quantum dots are intended to improve color, but “QLED” is not a guarantee of a particular color gamut or accuracy. Look for model-level measurements and consider the room: screen reflections and viewing angle can affect the experience as much as color capability.
Gaming and motion features
Check each model’s native refresh rate, variable refresh rate (VRR), Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), supported gaming resolutions, and HDMI inputs. Samsung says both its Neo QLED and QLED ranges offer features including ALLM and VRR, while exact offerings vary by model (Samsung’s guide). For a gaming purchase, also consult reliable testing for input lag; the display label does not tell you how responsive a particular TV is.

Overall value
Compare TVs with similar screen sizes and resolutions, and account for smart platform, sound, warranty, and current price. A lower-priced QLED may be a better fit than a Mini LED model if its overall picture and features suit your needs; a more expensive set is not automatically a better buy because of its technology label.
Which type is right for you?
- Consider Mini LED if you want an LCD TV with more controlled backlighting, especially for bright rooms or HDR and other content with both bright highlights and dark areas. Check actual brightness, local dimming, and blooming performance.
- Consider QLED if quantum-dot color is a priority and you find a model whose price and measured performance fit your needs. QLED alone says little about that TV’s backlight or contrast.
- Consider a model that combines them if you want both quantum-dot color and Mini LED backlighting. Compare its price and model-level performance with similarly priced alternatives rather than assuming the combination guarantees a particular result.
For films watched in a dark room, look for testing of black levels, blooming, and shadow detail. For a bright room, compare measured brightness and reflection handling. For gaming, judge the exact set by its refresh rate, VRR, ALLM, inputs, supported resolutions, and tested input lag.

A current example: Samsung’s 2026 US lineup
On March 24, 2026, Samsung Electronics America announced its US Neo QLED 4K models QN80H and QN70H and Mini LED models M80H and M70H. Samsung describes the Neo QLED models as using both Mini LEDs and quantum dots (Samsung’s March 24, 2026 announcement). This is a dated US-market example, not a guarantee of availability or identical configurations in other regions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Mini LED better than QLED?
There is no universal winner because the terms describe different technologies, and a TV can use both. The official manufacturer materials cited here explain the technologies and product names, but do not establish a general performance winner with independent comparative measurements. Treat manufacturer brightness, color, contrast, or value claims as claims about that brand’s products, not category-wide results. For a purchase decision, compare independent tests of the exact models you are considering.
