Start by printing your printer’s built-in quality report or nozzle-check pattern on clean plain paper. If it shows missing color, gaps, or misaligned lines, follow the matching maintenance step for your printer model. If the report looks clean, investigate the document, app, image quality, paper, or print settings instead of repeatedly cleaning or replacing parts.
First, find out whether the printer or the job is causing the defect
Print a built-in print-quality report or nozzle-check pattern using the printer’s controls or its software. The exact menu names and procedure vary by model; use the manufacturer’s instructions if you cannot find the test. Compare the printed pattern with the example in those instructions. Missing or streaked color blocks and gaps in nozzle lines point toward ink delivery on an inkjet; broken or offset alignment patterns suggest an alignment problem. A clean pattern makes a fault in the file, application, settings, or paper more likely. HP’s print-quality troubleshooting guidance explains diagnostic-report, cleaning, and alignment procedures for supported DeskJet, ENVY, and OfficeJet printers; the steps are not universal across brands and models.
If the defect appears only in copies—not in a direct print or the printer’s own test—check the scanner path. A mark or vertical line on copies can come from dirt on the scanner glass rather than the print mechanism. Clean it only as directed in the device manual; HP’s Officejet 6600/6700 troubleshooting page covers copy-specific quality checks.
Match the symptom to the next check

Fix inkjet gaps or missing colors without wasting ink
On an inkjet, gaps in nozzle lines or missing color blocks can indicate low ink or clogged nozzles. Check the displayed ink levels, then use the diagnostic pattern—not the symptom alone—to decide whether to clean. If the pattern is defective, run the built-in printhead or cartridge cleaning utility and print another pattern to see whether it improved.

Cleaning consumes ink. Epson advises checking for clogged nozzles before cleaning in its model manual’s “Solving Print Quality Problems” section. Do not run cleaning cycles when the pattern is clean or when the problem appears to be the file, paper, or settings. Epson’s cited manual says that if up to three cleanings do not improve the result, wait at least 12 hours before trying again; that interval applies to that manual’s model, not every inkjet. For another model, follow its own instructions. Brother provides model-dependent steps in its inkjet print-quality guidance.
Correct blurry, crooked, or grainy output
For crooked or misaligned text
Use the printer’s alignment function if its alignment pattern shows lines that are broken or do not line up. Print another test after alignment. If the pattern is correct but the document still looks wrong, check the application and print settings before repeating the procedure. HP describes report, cleaning, and alignment steps for supported models in its DeskJet, ENVY, and OfficeJet instructions.

For fuzzy or grainy images
Check the source image’s resolution in relation to the size you are printing. Enlarging a low-resolution image does not create detail, so a working printer can still produce a fuzzy result. Confirm the selected print-quality setting as well. If the test page also has bands or gaps, investigate the printer’s output pattern; if it is clean, concentrate on the image and job settings.
Prevent smears by checking paper and handling
Before assuming a printer part has failed, confirm that the paper is dry, flat, loaded correctly, and supported by the model. In the print dialog or driver, choose the media type that matches the stock; the printer may apply different handling for plain, glossy, or other paper. Epson’s manual covers paper and settings checks in its print-quality troubleshooting section.

For glossy or double-sided inkjet pages, give the ink time to dry before touching or feeding the sheet back through the printer. If the page is still wet, handling or reloading it can cause smears. Change one setting or handling step at a time, then print again so you can tell what made a difference.
Use the right troubleshooting path for a laser printer
Laser printers do not use inkjet nozzles, so inkjet cleaning advice does not apply. Follow the instructions for the exact printer model when investigating recurring streaks. The model’s manual may call for checking that the paper is suitable for laser printing and may specify a drum-cleaning procedure. Brother’s laser streak troubleshooting page gives model-specific steps; its cited drum instructions warn against using tissues or paper towels because they can leave lint. Canon’s laser-printer guidance for print-quality problems likewise directs users to model-specific checks. Do not remove or clean parts in a way the manual does not describe.

When to stop and contact support
After each documented check or adjustment, print another test page. If the built-in cleaning or alignment procedure and the model’s paper checks do not correct the defect, stop before trying speculative disassembly or buying a cartridge, toner, or drum. Keep a sample of the faulty page and contact the manufacturer with the printer model and the steps you have tried. HP’s Deskjet D1600 print-quality troubleshooting page and the model-specific guidance linked above illustrate why the next step depends on the device and the pattern it prints.
